In your Co-ax....
I have installed a uniden UHF in my d2.
It receives beautifully but will not transmit. Today I was told it was probably an earth problem on the aerial. The aerial is a big thick shortish GME bull bar mounted uhf beast. Where do I go to find a short in this aerial?
Any comments would be welcomed. Regards Nick.

or if its a screwdown mount in the mount, Ive seen quite a number with the hookup on them done wrong missing insulators or pulled down so tight that the mount fractures internally and you either wind up with a full short or an open connection.
Tight bends or kinks that have been pulled through that have twisted or crushed the coax will destroy cheaper coax and require a whole new run.

Been a while since I did a UHF install but as a rule I always used a new cable kit and usually went for a GID (Ground independent) Aerial.
As a lot of bullbars are now powdercoated alloy or plastic id actually suggest using a shorter aerial and mounting it on the roof rack or even on an extension bar off a wheel carrier and the smaller GID 3.5 db rubber duckys will take a fair hammering from scrub etc if located correctly and I never trimmed excess coax but tucked it away instead.
New coax means less chance of failure and the shorter rubber ducky type come with coax already wired in so just terminate with a plug and away you go.

Thanks guys, the coax runs up into the aerial through the base of the aerial. Maybe the plug on the other end is where I stuffed up. It has been a while since I played with radios.
The set belonged to my late Brother who was a wide load pilot so I guess it did work when he had it. Will try again with the coax. Not quite sure if I can get up inside the fibre glass aerial part to check the join, will try the radio end first.
Thanks Guys.
Checked continuity on aerial, all good, must be the finals I guess. Bugger!
What exactly happens when you key the mike to TX?
Could be as simple as a busted mike cable, I used to see this a bit.
Buy a supposedly blown CB, chuck test mic on, hook it up to dummy load and SWR/PWR meter and wham! Wall to wall and tree top tall.

Solved the problem. It had the wrong mic on it. It was off a 27 meg set.
Thank you for all your advice. Regards, Nick.
