    Dual Battery System Maintenance/Longevity Questions

    Hi All,

    Just wanted to get some words from experience with dual battery setups. I currently run a deep cycle battery in the boot of my Disco 2. This runs a 40L engel and two point 240V inverter. Lately I haven't been driving or camping very often at all (last time would have been back in January and the car hasn't been driven more than 100km's since April) and the longest trip I'll go on is about 5 days.

    So essentially just want to know what people do in the way of charging for storing deep cycle batteries and also what sort of monitoring systems are out there to run in the car when driving it so I can keep an eye on where the battery is at (how much you need to spend to get a proper idea, and what you do and don't actually need in a system for this sort of use)

    At the moment I've had a recommendation for at least a 7 amp smart battery charger for storage. I'm wondering how much driving of the vehicle it would take for the car to keep it up to charge itself enough (so won't need to fork out for charger) and whether I can monitor all of this well enough through some sort of system.

    If it is only once in a while that you drive, I would invest in a smart charger. You'll spend more in fuel trying to top up two batteries over the course of 6months.

    I would recommend a 10 or 12amp charger, even an 8amp will suffice if you plan on leaving the battery/batteries on charge almost permanently.

    I use the old Ark Powerpack to keep mine topped up when not in use. The charger in that is quite small, 6amps from memory, but good to ensure battery longevity.

    can see the voltage in either battery from in the car just remember to check after car is off or you only get the alternator value. You can also jump start your self at the flick of the switch

    If you go the charger way you only need a trickle charger like a battery saver connected all the time at home they are cheap and easy to use
