Obviously this wont happen with the CTEK connector as you're not connecting an alligator clip, and the CTEK doesn't output any current until it verifies it's connected correctly to the battery.
I'd connect either way. If you're worried, you could put a 7.5 or 10 A waterproof blade fuse in the line.
