Try the Oppo camera and see if is up to your needs.
There are several Oppos so check the specs.
I use mine for work, documenting defects in buildings, many inside. Hence why I'm being a but picky about it.
The S5 camera takes blurry photos unless its near perfect light.
I plan to keep it for at least 2 years (hopefully more) and I use it a lot for media consumption so a decent screen and performance is good too.

I believe that Oukitel use a Sony camera lens so image quality is pretty good, the K1000 has a 5" screen and performance is good not that i have much to compare it to.
Biggest seller for me was the battery life, almost a week with with medium use. I saw that that just released a rugged phone which i would probably have bought instead.

I just bought a backup battery pack for $25 to keep mine charged.
Found out earlier today that the umidigi does in fact appear to have a fake second camera, so that's no longer on the list.
Now on top is the Nubia M2 which is $200 (for the gold version - you pay a $30 premium for the black version, which looks way cooler). Only issue I have there is the outdated software otherwise I would have ordered one already. It will be hard to go back from android 8...
Well, I ended up buying an LG G6. The model is a flagship from a few years ago. Retails at $599 in JB HiFi but I found one on eBay (an American Model) for $300 which includes a third party 1yr warranty and accident protection (hopefully I won't have to test that out!).
Compared to all the $300 phones (unknown chinese brands included) you can get here its camera is much better - up there with the galaxy S8 & iPhone 8 apparently. The other specs are pretty decent, though the battery is a non-removable 3300mAh so we'll see how that goes (apparently it will last a day easy under normal use, two is a struggle. Shouldn't be too bad as I'm usually not far from a power outlet, and power saving modes should help when I'm far from home. I can always get a power bank)
Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I guess I should have titled the post ”Best Midrange cheap smartphone"
Cheers
Dan
Sounds fine. Does the American model work on the same frequency as the Aussie ones?
Slightly different but according to the two websites I checked I will have full coverage on the optus network. Dunno about other networks.
Im pretty excited for it to show up - I've had the S5 for 3 years and the last 12 it has been getting slower and slower. I will keep it to check out lineageOS16 when its released, but I don't think I'll miss it day to day!
My S5 is still going strong, but I have it set to ask me to do updates - I haven't let it do the last couple.

I'm running ressurection remix Oreo on mine. Was running lineageOS 14 (android 7.1) before that. Ran pretty well on 7.1 but I upgraded as I found a better camera app that only worked on 8.1.
Regular updates used to be good. Now there's a bunch of phones where it just causes more problems.
