So I recently installed one of these alpine head units into my 2004 discovery. Its a little pricey but it is a top notch bit of kit and it has the capability of utilizing the discovery's steering controls straight out of the box. I just wanted to make a simple "how to" for everyone regarding the wiring of the steering controls. You will need a 1000 ohm resistor to complete the job. I just soldered all connections although you could easily crimp them.
here is a section from the alpine diagram that illustrates the steering control wires on the back of the unit:
here is the grey plug which you will find in the discovery's head unit hole, you need to cut the wires at the rear of this plug and re wire them.
here is the pin diagram for that grey plug.
And finally my super professional wiring diagram that shows how you need to hook it all up.
Once you have finished it all up, the last thing to do is program the unit to identify each resistance as a command. This took me 5 minutes of messing with the head unit menus.
