    It didn't say if people using the old 40 channel radios have to go to the new 80 channel ones.

    I doubt they will, how would the authorities know. Channels 1~40 are the same on both sets.

    I think the theory is the 80 channels are narrower bands whereas the 40 channels are a wider band so can interfere on adjacent channels.

    Usually happens the other way around, the older 40 channel radios get upset under some circumstances when the 80's are doing their thing.

    You'll get an annoying squelch break that wont play nice.

    There was a 25kHz spacing in the 40 channel system, so the ACMA made that a 12.5kHz spacing and placed channels 41 - 80 in between the old channels.
