    Head unit and speaker recommendations?

In the middle of putting a new dash in (Mud console again, just changing a few bits round) and decided to change the stereo and speakers while I'm at it.

So, first question - I've always thought the front speakers in a Defender sound shocking, which is true of mine even though it has had aftermarket Pioneer ones fitted by the previous owner...so, what are people using?

Secondly, was going to put a DVD player in, but I'm wondering in all honestly how long it woudl last in an offroad car, so am now thinking either simple radio with iPod interface, or MP3 player whcih takles media cards of some sorts. Just wondered what others run?

Also don't really want to go to external amps (Nowhere to put the damn things!) so coudl do with a head unit with a decent chunk of power.

For around $400.00 you could go an Alpine 9883e
    50w x 4
    3 RCA pre outs
    MP3/WMA playback (ID3 Tag)
Ready for iPod optional cable $45

Alpine is some of the best audio gear in the business
Will handle rough terrain 30sec memory delay
What more can I say Alpine kicks butt

Thanks Ken - I'd always been an Alpine and Kenwood fan back in the UK, but no idea how they'd hold up in a Defender - hence the question.

    Hi Ken,

I too will recomend Alpine I have it throughout my 07DEF and the way this baby kicks you'd think I was a pimply teenage boy in a duf duf car! Another thing to think about with your headdeck is it to get one with a sub out then purchace a selfpowered flat line sub as per Solmaniac's recomendation of a JVC - CS-BB2. from Wow. They can easly mount on the back of your centre cubby and makes a huge difference!!

    Cheers,

I have Alpine head unit with iPod adapt. , changed the speakers over for Alpine as well, use the headunit to power those speakers (I think 35w) & then the sub in the back for BASS ran power & sub out to the back so all I need to do is simply pull out the wires to the amp if I need more space. The box is carpeted & doesn't move at all when I go around corners.
