    HF radio.....short listed

i'm considering a HF radio.....among plenty of other things for the defender but it seems to always be at the top of the list 'safety'

i have only done a bit of research and at this stage i have short listed a BARRETT 250 with remote head and multitap antenna

i was considering older type units with cystals as it suited my budget much better but i'm thinking features like selcall and telcall would be handy

celcall - i think i understand - its a connection between two hf radios for a private conversation, well away from normal traffic

telcall - i have no idea

who out there uses celcall/telcall, good bad, must have?????

any other tips on the barrett range

Selcall, handy maybe to have. I've never used it in mine. Ditto for Telcall
IMHO the multitap antenna is the go, with more precise tuning than an Autotune.
Barrett V Codan, whats the Difference?

Can't help you on what radio to buy, as although I've been going through this same excercise, my requirements are very different.

For a multi-tap antenna, the best I found price wise was from FAMPARC who do a straight 5 tap one for VKS type use. I bought the one with all the amateur bands on as well, but am also now hunting an autotune to go with a Codan radio. The tapped whip will get used with my Kenwood amateur set in the other vehicle.

If you want an Autotune, I have found a source, but it will cost way more than the Barratt 250 radio!

SELCALL (Selective Calling) - Basically a system whereby your radio is programmed with an ID, and it can be called by another SELCALL equipped radio, or you can call another set directly. It isn't private comms, it's just a way to single out a radio you want to talk to, and it uses the same frequncies as everyone else on the network you subscribe to, and isn't priority traffic either.

TELCALL (Telephone Selective Calling) - The ability to dial a telephone number, via a base station or network providing the service (i.e. VKS, VMS etc.) using SELCALL to address the base.

I can't help you on how valuable these are as I haven't used them.

I have an 8528 Codan with an auto tune whip. We recently spoke to someone in Sydney while driving in eastern Arnhem ( NT ) and the transmission was reasonably clear. We have SELCALL but never use it - we just set up a SKED and stick to that.

Having said that I would be looking at SAT phones now a days - prices are coming down. You can get prepaid and there are some reasonable government rebates available. Probably for another thread. Cheers, Erich
