Hey Ian, I fitted 4" Coaxial Polk Audio Speakers to my classic rangie, nice sound not too expensive but also not cheap - the model was a DB400

I replaced mine with Kenwoods in the Fender and they were 4" so should fit the Disco. About $80 a pair from memory and good quality. In the rear when I had my Disco I left the old 4" in place and made some boxes up and mounted near the roof near the cargo barrier and put in some pioneer 300w 6x9s for a much better sound.
Sony and Pioneer also make 4" speakers that I know will fit. Maybe get a set that accept the standard tweeters that are in your Disco front pillars. I know pioneer make a suitable set. Not sure how easy it is to connect the tweeters to a standard set of 2 ways.

I wish! I don't want to go hacking up the interior or my baby, but I would like to get the best possible sound, I don't know which brand is best in standard size. Thanks for your input.

Mate, there is no 'best brand'. If youv'e ever seen a tyre thread you'll know what i mean. Other factors will determine your decision. Are you still running your ractory head unit, or after market? Are you going to run a larger system in the future with external amps? If it is the factory stereo, then there is no point buying the best brand as it will not have the power to drive higher quality speakers. You need to match the stereo with speakers that can be driven efficiently.

To this end, any of the regular brands mid range speakers, (pioneer, sony, kenwood etc) will be fine. IMO it would be a waste putting $2-300 speakers in to be driven by a factory head unit.

4" is standard for the D1.

No I don't want to change the head, just the speakers; they sound like they're shot, literally

Ok, thats fine, but if this is the case, big dollars for high end speakers are just not worth it.

Actually its not unusual to get a better sound, (albeit this is subjective), from factory speakers, because the lower power factory head unit drives them more effciently than heavier after market speakers.

Have a listen to the various brands as there will be a difference, but ensure when you do listen, that the amps are off on the demo wall, as you will not have the benefit of these.

Also make sure you have already removed one of your factory speakers, and check depth and mounting depth clearance. All aftermarket speakers will give a mounting depth on the box. Don't want to get caught out there.

We put focal 2 piece in our D3. They fit in perfectly and look stock...........This combined with a Rockford Fosgate 360 to enhance the output of the stock head radically changed the system. Hope this helps!
