    nRoute. Does anyone use it ?

    Hi Guys;

    I downloaded nRoute from www.garmin.com and installed it on my Laptop earlier , I then connected my Garmin 60CSX via USB

    Overall, nRoute seems to be a good program.

    It is certainly several steps up from using the GPS tab in MapSource for real time tracking.

    Unfortunately, it won't auto route with anything but an unlocked City Select or City Navigator product AND a GPS unit unlocked to that product.

    I use nRoute with City Navigator and a cheap gps mouse which is also used with OziExplorer etc.

    A program called GpsGate makes it all work.

    My setup notes include this:
    GpsGate provides an interface between an NMEA output GPS and nRoute.
    Why do we need GpsGate?
    Although data is unlocked on MapSource, nRoute locks the data when the GPS connects.
    This is the workaround:
    Install GpsGate which creates virtual COM ports and converts NMEA to Garmin emulation and lots more. Allows you to use several programmes with the same GPS for example.
    You set your GPS to output to NMEA, have the GPSGate wizard find the GPS and create a virtual COM port that emulates Garmin.
    Set nRoute to this virtual COM port and you are away - nothing locked.

    If you have city navigator running Ok and your ONLY problem is not having an unlocked GPS unit then you can use GpsGate. This will allow you to use any gps unit that puts out NMEA data.
    If you want more "info" on GpsGate, send me a pm

    Thanks Miky ;

    City navigator mapping software is unlocked in mapsource and so is Garmin 60CSX , and From what you are saying I may not need to install GPSgate , nRoute seems to be doing an excellent job of allowing Real-Time Tracking and Voice Guidance using City navigator MapData ?

    As far as I know with City navigator and a Garmin gps (both unlocked) nRoute should just work on a laptop.
    In my case, I had City Navigator running on a laptop but did not have a garmin gps. As is, City Navigator was doing what I got it for, I was happy with the product. I then saw it running under nRoute (free download) with a voice saying when to turn etc. etc. and thought "now that's cool" so I downloaded nRoute so I could do that on my laptop... but of course it did not work since I did not have the Garmin gps. I then discovered GPSgate. Problem solved.

    GPSgate does more than just allow me to use nRoute of course. It electronically allows the one GPS mouse to power more than piece of software at the same time.

    I hooked up the laptop with the GPS unit attched via USB and had it sitting on the passenger seat , the only programming running on the laptop was "nRoute" ,I searched for an address and off i went to test it out , occasionally the female voice keeps getting heard " Lost satellite reception " ???

    according to the GPS unit there is full Satellite reception , -+7m accuracy and on nRoute satellite page there is full Satellite reception as well, this has me puzzled as to why nRoute keeps telling me when it has lost Sattelite reception but there is full reception ,I know every second or so the laptop gets signal via USB from the GPS unit , could there be something wrong with my USB cable ? well I changed the cable and infact I chaged the USB port on the Laptop , and still doing the same thing ???

    I'll keep working on it until I get it to work right and let you know , meanwhile if anyone has any ideas please throw them in .

    I hope the gps unit was not also sitting on the seat?

    I have found that the gps always needs to have a good view of the satellites. I have used a garmin sitting on the dash close to windscreen.

    I now use a gps on the roof. Small mouse type with mag base.

    Miky;

    the Garmin unit clicks on to a Bracket and with a Suction cup which then mounts onto the front winscreen,this is got me puzzled ??

    the USB cable is long enough to reach the laptop which reside on front passenger seat Until I get a Rammount for it .GPS has full satellite reception.. I replaced the cable and tried a different USB port
