its a variation on a 5 pin DIN plug, same layout as a Uniden UH015 but not too sure wether the pin configuration is the same

sadly, nobody i know of still runs anything as ancient as a TX4000 (waaaaay older than your TX4400, my TX4000 has service stickers dating from 1994 in it!) so finding someone with a mic i can borrow is a bit hard.....

all i know is i can get the unit to tx without any sound by bridging 2 of the pins

I know the TX4000 is old. I bought my TX4400 when they first came out. That is about 2002. Then the TX4200 was before that of course so yours is bloody old as you say.
Still I thought they had the RJ11 plug.

If you can get it to transmit by bridging two pins (will it do it by using the PTT button?) but it doesn't actually transmit then my bet is the microphone component itself. Try Jaycar or a reseller for another one.

I've got a GME microphone here from an AM set with a ch8 button where the selcall button is. It has a 5 pin female plug like a 5 pin DIN plug. Would be of the same era. No idea if it works though but I'll take it apart and have a look later.

    I thought they had a 6-pin plug.
