Good UHF/CB Radio for travelling
Hi all,
I'm currently traveling around Australia, with the aim of shipping my car to New Zealand and onwards to South and North America. As an amateur in the field, I'm wondering what is the most suitable radio system to cover such a wide spectrum of countries? As I understand it, if I buy a UHF radio here, the frequencies will only be useful in AU, and probably New Zealand. Are there any dual band receivers out there that would be suitable for my purposes? Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you're willing to go for your Amateur ( HAM ) license I don't think there's an easy solution for you.
The CB or "public" bands vary greatly between each country. Also you might have hassles at Customs trying to import a set not approved for that country.
With a HAM Foundation license you'd have access to the HAM freqs ( HF, UHF, VHF) and get in touch with reliable locals as you travel ( not those CB tools ). You can get a HAM radio unit that will cover all the bands ( HF, UHF, and VHF ) in a tiny car unit and even cover CB and VKS737 HF if you want. With your Amateur license you'd be able to take it to most countries without hassles. ( unless you were going to North Korea ! )On HAM HF freqs you'd be able to talk to people in Australia from the US or NZ for example. However the Foundation license does need a bit of time to take the course and sit the exam so not sure if that's practical for you.

The Icom IC-400 Pro is programmable so providing the country you are in uses uhf for their cb band then that may be a way to go.
