2000 TD5: Remove factory cd/radio and install new unit

Can some kind soul please explain the procedure to remove my old standard cd/radio? I've read on other posts that I'll probably need an 'Aeropro' face plate adaptor and an ISO plug for the new unit. Having just been quoted $70 for a face plate and $100 to fit the unit I'd much rather put that dough towards some decent speakers!
I'm pretty handy with a screwdriver but hopeless on the techie bits so if someone can recommend a good basic CD, MP3, USB compatable unit and what sort of speakers to get to replace my stock standard door models that'd be great.

    Hi

I just replaced mine, I did a Alpine head unit with blue tooth.
I did Focal speakers splits in the front and standard in the rear.
The front come with external crossovers and sound amazing.

A bit pricey but worth it. The blue tooth sounds through all the speakers also and is wicked.
Cost around $1400 incl install but can't compare quality really.
Focal also make a special powered subby to go under seat for $600 bucks but my budget did not stretch.
The plug, A din or something they just cut from memory.

Good luck, and if going with a blue tooth integrated set up, try your phone with it first in the shop, on some models my phone would not sync.

It might sound a bit primitive, but a get a wire coat hanger and cut it into 4 pieces and put a piece each into the the 4 holes in the corners of the head unit. The tricky part is to move each one until you feel them engage the locking mechanism. When all 4 are in the right position the head unit will slide out easily.

Helps if you have another set of hands but have done it on my own for both my 97 Disco and 2000 Defender.

Once the factory one is out a new one should slide straight in with no need for any face plates etc.

Pretty sure i posted about doing this with pics. I'll look for it..

Yep found its not step by step , but you should be able to get the idea of the prongs needed. simple fence wire, and a bit of fiddling. Pm any questions. PS I know the thread title says D1 radio by my photos are for the D2.

I found the correct ISO plug was way over the top in price so I modified one that suited a rice burner. This was under ten bucks from supercheap.

Wire in the side holes works a treat, I put Eclipse MP3 player in mine, speakers can wait until amps go in.

    Howdy,

I too am keen to hear of a cheapish stereo head unit that will slot straight in preferrably with a face jack for ipod/iphone.

    Cheers

    Hi DaveF,

About 2 weeks ago I purchased from Aldi, a. Onix car stereo. Only $87.00.
Old unit out, new unit in no problems. No new face plate or connections required. So far impressed with unit.
I you have an Aldi store in SA, Call in and see if they still have stock. You could be lucky.

    Lightbulb Stereo removal

I actually made up my own jig using 4 x old satay sticks slotted into a bit of 75 x 35 pine and it worked a treat!
Unfortunately my new head unit has a totally different wiring plug so I'm now in the process of figuring out what goes with what. I remember coming across a thread somewhere which explained this sorting out process so I'll look for that.
    Many thanks for everyones help.
