96 TDi UFH/Antenna setup for island usage

G'day. I've done some research on UHF and Antennas recently and concluded that I would get an Icom 400 Pro with a 4.5dB ground independent antenna.

I would like to know if anybody with a 96 Disco TDi managed to fit an Icom 400 Pro in the compartment above the rear-view mirror? And if so, how were the wires fed to the battery or ignition? If not, where is the next best place you fitted it to?

Will this be overkill for island off-road use (Stradbroke Island and Moreton Island)? The middle tracks have trees everywhere and get a bit hilly, so I figured a 4.5dB antenna would be a good all rounder for beach and track use. The island also has a repeater which the Icom 400 Pro makes use of.

I have a habit of trying to buy what is best because it will be better quality and last longer. But if you think I am better off with a GME UHF then talk me into it All my mates and family have GME but they all differ in quality which makes iffy about choosing one.

    Thanks for reading.

UHF CB: Prestigecom.com.au - UHF CB - ICOM IC-400 PRO UHF CB Radio - $383.90

    Antenna: Prestigecom.net.au Mobile One CP474S 4.5db UHF CB Antenna - $154.00

I have a big brother of the IC 400 Pro (IC F621) mounted there.

IIRC the smaller 400 will mount further forward and makes a neater installation.

See pics for how I ran the cable. The cable for mine is heavier than that for the 400 pro and I have an extra speaker cable there as well.

Bush65, thank you very much for taking the time to post those clear photos. It looks very neat! I can see how you did it, thanks!

THE BOOGER, glad to hear there is no problems fitting it. I am not permitted to use the 25W freq without an amateur radio license yeah? does the repeater function at 5W? Does that make it overkill for my convoy use? That may come out as a noob question but I am eager to learn.

Ultimately, as a photographer, I want to eventually be set up to listen in on possible photojournal opportunities as they happen around my area. Not sure if that is illegal or not, if it is I won't bother. I'm happy to sit the amateur radio license test if necassary... some ADF positions require you to operate radios, so it would be handy for me anyway.

We have a commercial freq but dont need to do course for the lic our repeater is private but there are cb repeaters all over that are free access they are all located on ch,s 1 to 8. If you are adf and need to use radios they will teach you as mil RTP is different from civilian ham ops lic( i was qualified sig in the army) best not to learn bad habbits if the island your going to has a repeater you will have good coverage for about 15 to k,s all round the repeater regardless of trees but not deep gullies or mountains.

P.S what sort of photogher a digital apco 25 scanner may be the way to go.Dont worry to much about state laws on scanners as fed law overrides them they are legal feds control there import, oh and your not a terrorist are you. news reporters use them all the time.

P.S P.S a good antenna is worth paying for as they can make a good radio work great.

It is a long time since I had a 400 pro, so I stand to be corrected if my memory is a bit out.

Also I don't know if they still apply to new versions.

One thing that annoys most people is the loud beep when you power up. There are several ways to change this default setting - I used the cloning software to change it on mine.

The default squelch setting is too quiet and does not allow you to hear weak signals - even miss calls from others in convoy, where the other radios don't have a problem. This can be changed with cloning software. Can also be changed from front controls but I'm not sure if I had to program keys for this or not.

If you program cb channels for high (25W) Tx, the 400 pro reverts to the default 5W if you toggle back to 5W using front controls. The only way to have 25W after toggling is to program another bank to the CB frequencies.

If you are interested I still have the program I used with second bank programmed to the CB frequencies. You will need the programming cable - used to be able to buy programming cable from MB Radio Electronics.

There are 2 different software for these.

Cloning software is what you want to program the 400Pro

Adjust software is for technicians who know what they are doing and have to necessary instruments to measure what is happening. The adjust software will allow you to crank considerably more than 25W out of the 400Pro. But you can easily do something to make it inoperable.

I wish the RI's would hit the channel 4 repeaters in the Illawarra and Mount Riverview, unless you are one of the select few you can't use the repeaters without coping foul mouthed abuse and threats of violence. And if that doesn't get rid of you then they blow you away with there high powered radios.
