Installing a Pioneer head unit into a 01 D2 Discovery
Long story short, pulled out the old head unit to look at fixing some dash lights, put old unit back in, enterd code and the number 4 button didnt work on the unit, and of course my code had a 4 in it, so had to get a new unit.
Got one on e-bay that looked ok, shot down to Autobarn to get an adapter for the wiring and away we went.
So here is some pics of the process, you may also note that I had a bit of trouble getting the old unit back out again. Must have done something putting it back in the first time...
Out with the dremel, and some screwdrivers and out she popped.
The old and new unit and wiring harness. The harness you need is an Aerpro to match whatever unit you are installing, to go into a Euro ISO set up. This is exactly what I asked for and he new what I needed.
After just feeding the wiring back into the dash and clipping in the new unit, I ran the plug out thru the top of the dash for the I-pod and it just sits where ever you like really, as the unit controls the i-pod once plugged in.
Some may notice that I didnt get a face panel trim with the headset.. and I will be fixing that little problem I can assure you..
So thats it pretty much. The hardest part was getting the old unit out, and if I didnt have to destroy it, then I would estimate the whole job would take an hour or so, probably not even if your good with this stuff.
Hope this helps someone else if they decide to do the same
Having worked in the Car audio industry previously, i can tell you that there are plenty of vehicles that have after market head units fitted where the face trim cannot be used. If you have no luck getting the trim from the previous owner, try a local car audio installer, they will probably have a box full of left over trims in the work shop. Just cross your fingers they have a pioneer one and have 6 pack handy.
I'm also curious if you had steering wheel controls with the factory unit, and if so, do you still have this functionality with the aftermarket unit.
