I am wondering if anyone could give me advice on the best replacement speakers for the stereo (just the two front speakers) in my 95 Defender. They are very rattley with base and I'm wondering what size, how many watts, how many ohm, and what brand would be the best to source as replacements.
I know it migt sound funny to ask what size but I'm currently 5000km away from my Defender.
Cheers,

It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Standard they are a 4 inch and they are the worst speakers I have ever seen. The problem with bigger to going to 5 1/4 is space. The heater piping runs behind them also which limits clearance. The main issue though is they point toward your feet. For this reason I use a good quality 2 piece component speaker (4 inch mid with separate tweeters) with the tweeter mounted on the top of the dash. Soft domes tweeters are preferable as they have a smoother and less harsh sound with a broader frequency response. It lifts the soundstage and makes it much more open and clearer. Then get some form of bass coming from the boot. good old 6x9s in separate boxes are pretty good and cheap, with plugs so you can remove them if you need the space. I have done this to both my defenders and they sound soooo much better than standard and costs bugger all to do. I have quite long cables to the rears so I can put them on the roof for some outdoor sounds.
Sorry to further answer your question.
It is irrelevant what the wattage is unless you are going to run a amplifier. Even then it is not all that important. You only have so much power (probably 15-20watt RMS) from the head unit so they will all be fine. A better quality speaker will tend to higher wattage anyway.
They will all be 4ohms
Brand is not a major. Best quality you can afford really. but not many to do 4 and tweeter component set which is a must in Defender. They sound way better than a two way and well worth the extra spend.
Bass. well they are 4 inch so forget bass. better quality ones will have more travel and longer coils but still bugger all. You need some bigger speaker in the boot for this. You are missing half the music if you have no bottom end so it well worth thinking about. 6x9s w and good fronts will all run off any head unit.
Does anyone know whether you can fit 5 1/4" speakers into a defender without having to put in an adapter?
I too am looking into changing speakers...dont want to put a raised adapter in to make bigger speakers fit as my knees are already up at the dash so dont want anything hanging down anymore than it needs to

The whole interior is different and I am not familiar with it, but the principals are the same. Pull them apart and see what they are, then get better ones. Alot of the Pumas had the extra tweeters on the dash option fitted so yours may be as good as your are likely to get with out spending big coin.
You can buy much better 4" speakers that will fit in the standard holes. I put in Kenwood 200watt 4" speakers as was all I could get locally at the time.
You can also get split system speakers and mount the tweeter somewhere else though these tend to increase the price.
Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, Fusion to name a few all have 4" speakers in their range. It does make it better but will never be great with the speakers pointed at the floor and your knees.
