Any update, I'm keen to see if it worked so that I can hopefully do it too.

It works. R4+Z can confirm this. He's currently using the remote so should confirm from his end shortly. Like I said all up costs about $10 and is as good or better than the remote that comes with the DVD Player.

The solution appears to work perfectly. Andrew was great with proof of concept but I had problems with a DVD that needed language selection. Spenboyd who is close to me has volunteered to let me record his remote which may fix this once and for all but as his DVD player isn't currently working, we have to see if his remote (he has just purchased the car following the recent spectacular hail storms here) will work my sons DVD.
Once I have a truly fully working version, I can record this to my PDA which has Nero on board which means that I can virtually guarrantee not to lose it. That way if anybody wants a copy I can for about $20 fix anybody up with a replacement (about $10 for the remote and $10 for posting it on)! For the record the remote I bought cost a stunning total of $8.52 including postage which I ordered to be delivered to Andrew, so no additional cost. It cost me more for the padded bag to get it from Andrew to me than to buy and ship the unit in the first place.
I also want to make special mention to Andrew who when I couldn't get a local reply stepped up to the plate and has been of so much help in proving that this can work! Ironically I now seem to be benefitting from the recent storms here as Spenboyd's misfortune means he has bought another vehicle which has a DVD (albeit not working) but it has a working (hopefully) remote!
I will post back the results!

R4
Edited to say, Datt, for all intents and purposes the current setup I have works perfectly, being a perfectionist and not wanting to let down anybody I pass this onto I want to make sure that I can say "press this key and it will do what this key did on the original", That is the only reason I have not yet said I have the solution! But you are welcome to a copy of what I currently have (give me a week and I may well have the permenant solution)!

Well I'm pleased to report that the solution works perfectly!!
I used an el-cheapo learning remote from Ebay (this one to be precise...Universal Learning Remote Control for TV VCR SAT DVD - eBay Other Remote Controls, Remote Controls, Accessories, Electronics. (end time 14-May-10 14:31:19 AEST) )
For the princely sum of $8.52 including postage!!!!
The one drawback is that the original remote has more keys than the learning remote has. However the learning remote has more than one page! So I decided that if the image on the key looked like it related to the function, then that is what it would be on the "home" TV page and everything else would be programmed on the next (DVD) page. Also where there was no corresponding entry on the DVD page I would also programme the key the same as the TV page (saves shifting pages unnecessarily).
Thanks to Spenboyd, I was able to complete the job Andrew had so kindly started and (Yes I will bring it back hopefully tomorrow). I'm sure Spenboyd will be doing this himself soon as the battery carrier on his remote is missing and I was so apprehensive trying to bend the battery connection to make it work!
One big advantage was that the company I work for has a top of the line Brother P-touch which made labelling the keys easier (you can force it into puting three lines on a 12mm tape which makes the print small enough to fit between keys). Although I need to see if I can get black on silver to improve the finished product.
So if anyone needs a replacement, feel free to PM me!
