    Lightroom 3 or Aperture 3 ????

Ok, after getting to grips with a Mac (after 20 years of PC's), I can honestly say I should have made the change sooner...

However, when it comes to Lightroom 3 vs Aperture 3, I find that a different story.

I find Lightroom much better, easier to use and MUCH more convenient in a mixed Mac / PC environment.

Does anyone else agree or disagree??? I was sort of hoping to use Aperture as it seems to be better integrated into other apps, but the idea of having to have folders, projects and stuff just seems clunky.

I like to organise my photos in folders by year-mm-dd_some-title, that way I can see them from the PC and the Mac and from whatever app I like. I dont seem to be able to do that in Aperture - maybe im missing something???

I have 10 years worth of digital photo's, so that more than 1 or 2 to catalogue as well!

Any thoughts or suggestions? Which do you use?

    Jon

Lightroom has proven over time to keep more at the forefront of photo scene. Apple in their typical "we aint tellin'" ways never hint at upcoming releases, never release public beta programmes and as such you never know what's going to be fixed, improved etc.

    Lightroom FTW

I use Aperture 3 and don't have any problems

you can have multi libraries and swap between them

you can create project folders l title mine yearmonthday and then whatever l have take a shot of for example 101125 Gardenia Flowers and it sorts them all in date order

you can do any search by keywords of individual pictures

you can do searches by folder name project name or event name

    Hi John,

You can do this with Aperture.

Its called a Referenced Library. That is, you store your master image files (eg RAW ) wherever you like and link them to Aperture by creating a Referenced Library. That way you can still work the way you are doing now and open the master images with a PC as well.

All changes and preview images etc are then stored in the Aperture Library file so the originals are not touched. I like Aperture as you can set it up to store your files and work however you want to.
    Cheers

Excellent! Many thanks. I'll give that a look.

I love Lightroom 3, but have not used Aperture, I could never get my head around Iphoto when I moved to a Mac, then used the Beta version of Lightroom for months then purchased the full working version. It is a very complex program and does take a while to get on top of it, but if you shoot in RAW I find it a fantastic tool and converter, I can never really see me going back to any other program on either a Mac or PC now days.
