Thread: New lap top wireless connection

To get an expert ??? to help you may need to say specifically what laptop and operating system and same for router. Would help, I imagine.
I am no expert, it always just seems to work when I have to do this.

It's a bit unclear what you mean regarding the memory stick. I am assuming you have the security code for the WiFi network stored on the memory stick.

I am also assuming your new laptop has built in WiFi capability. It should then detect available WiFi networks and enable you to enter the security code for your router, which it should list. I see no reason for you to have to do anything with the router itself.

I think the procedure should be very similar to that in Vista.

Is it actually a memory stick or is it really a 'wireless' stick for your old laptop which may not have had built in wireless ? If this is the case you will not need it (the stick) with your new laptop.

O.K. right terminology..flash drive
I open wireless setup, select auto. It tells me to insert flash drive in usb port and it downloads settings. I then have to remove the flash drive and insert it into wireless access point. WHAT WIRELESS ACCESS POINT???? mY WIRELESS ROUTER DOES NOT HAVE A USB PORT. I then unplug flash drive and insert it into usb port on laptop where it downloads info. It is then reinserted into usb port on computer where all is completed. It is this wireless access point that has me beaten. Jim

Are you sure W7 doesn't think you are trying to install a wireless dongle (eg. prepaid Telstra/Vodafone/3/Optus) to access the net?

There may be confusion between WiFi (home wireless network via your router) and Wireless Internet (eg. Next G via USB modem etc).

Maybe you need to carefully check your laptop network settings to make sure you are dealing with the correct configuration setup.

I have a laptop running on Vista and have recently bought a new Netbook running on Windows 7 - and we have a DLink wireless router at home.

Don't have to plug anything in anywhere - just turn on your new laptop and get Windows 7 running. Then procedure is pretty much as Lionel previously described. Click on the little icon at bottom right of screen that shows available wireless networks - you should see your DLink if it is turned on and has previously been set up. Click on this and it will ask you to connect - also check the "connect automatically" box so that next time it will just connect automatically for you. If you have security set on your DLink (mad if you don't), you will be prompted for the password - you will only have to enter this once. Should work fine from there.

At the moment, I'm sitting at the DOME cafe at Perth airport using the Netbook and somebody else's wireless network (there's a couple of free ones around airports, MacDonalds etc) and I have never had any problem logging onto any of them, and have never had to plug in a flash drive or anything else to get up and running.

Tried everything I know and still won't connect. It sees the wireless link but that is it.
