    iPhone questions

Got a pair of iPhone 4 16Gb last night. I have a few questions – bear with me please.

    Sync to iTunes

The instructions say the first thing we have to do is sync the phone to iTunes. What is the purpose of this? The girl in the shop went in to the back room to do this – not sure if it also has to be synced from home ro what?

We have one computer with iTunes on it, but two iPhones. How does this work? If we download an app from the iTunes store does this mean we can put it on both phones (as in 2 for the cost of 1) or what?

    Internet

I haven’t set up the wireless internet at home on the iPhone properly yet, but I gather once this is done the phone will automatically connect to wi-fi and use that bandwidth rather than download from the 3G/Next G network – thus saving the data allowance on the mobile plan. Is that right ? Is there any way to be sure that the phone is connected wirelessly rather than through the Telstra network? Can you tell the phone to ask you before it downloads data via the Telstra network?

    Multitasking

I gather the iPhone 4 can multi task but I’m not sure exactly what this means in practical terms. How can I be sure that programs I don’t want to use are actually closed. Google Maps for example. I don’t want it to continually download maps. When I press the menu / home button (the one below the screen) will that automatically close an application?

    Games

There don’t appear to be ANY games pre loaded onto the phone? What’s with that?
How to I get some good games and what ones would people recommend? Is there an iPhone game review site or something?

Are there free games as well as ones you have to pay for?

    Tapatalk

Where do I download this from ?

    Other apps

What other “basic” apps are worth getting?

Are there free apps as well as ones you have to pay for?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Apple's DRM (Digital Rights Management) lets you put any downloaded content onto up to five devices (phones, iPads, computers). This is especially good for apps like Tomtom which we have loaded on both mine & my wife's iPhones.

Yes. Only if you want to be extra sure that the phone isn't leeching stuff off 3G then go to settings and disable notifications to most apps. Otherwise you will find that when you're out and about it is constantly polling the internet to see how many emails, facebook updates etc you have.

Double click the home button at the bottom. This pops up a bar showing all running apps. You can close them by pressing and holding on each icon then a small minus sign comes up. Press that again and the app is fully closed.

Millioons of free games. Browse the app-store for a bit and you will find there are ratings and a whole category for free stuff.

I don't use it because it costs (although it is only $2.99). I'm happy using plain old Safari for this forum.

Again, browse the app store. The beauty of free apps over wi-fi is you can just download them, check them out then delete them if they aren't to your liking. To delete unwanted stuff just press and hold your finger over the icon. You get another small X on the ones that are removable. Press that and hit delete when prompted.

Most of the ones on there are not much good and alos in common use - hard to figure when its my or someone elses phone goping.

So - where can I get good ringtones from? (preferably for free)

Also how can I upload a song snippet etc and assign that as a ring tone ?

    Thanks

There are apps to convert your mp3's into ringtones

If you want to make your own, you'll need iOS4+ though.

Beware that in some cases with free apps you will get ads and then be often prompted to pay to remove the advertising.

You can tell if the iPhone is using wifi or 3G by the icon near the top left of the scfeen. Wifi is a fan-shaped icon and 3G is ... 3G. I never used to worry about it until one day my wireless router hung and I was unknowingly downloading megabytes via 3G. Used most of my monthly allowance in a day. Now I look at it lots.

A useful app is Quota. It can keep tabs on your data usage and display a pro-rata graph that tells you how you're travelling. It can do the same for your home broadband and a lot of other stuff.

syncing the phone keeps a backup on your computer......

should anything happen to your phone for example.....and you get a new one....
you just plug it in to your itunes.....and this will restore it back to how it was.....
    all your contacts....songs.....pics.....movies.....apps.... etc.....

and its easier to download apps and updates through itunes.....and then connecting your phone and syncing to transfer them across.....

down load a game called..... words with friends free.........and search for me....defenderzook......its like scrabble......and lots of fun.....
    especially when im winning.......

    oh....another thing....go to settings......then general......then usage......
here you can see how much data you are using........
just reset this manually when your billing period ends...and you will know how much data you have used.....

ive got a gig with my contract.......and im lucky to get anywhere near half that and thats with using maps.....games etc.......
with my contract.....social networking is free......so it wont count towards my usage......
these include ebay twitter facebook msn and some others......

youtube will use data the fastest......

    any more questions......just ask away.....
