Hmmmm, troublesome little bugger.
I don't think the drive letter is the problem if you have a red x.....
But, to answer your question, If I want to change the drive letter on my CD ROM 0 - DVD (E

, just right click on the box with that label, then click Change and select a letter not in use.
But that red cross worries me. If it was a bare drive I assumed you created a partition, (usually the max space (megs) available), then you have to format it, usually NTFS, then the computer should auto assign a drive letter that is not in use.
A conflicting drive letter is usually only a problem for existing drives attached to a different computer.
If you can a screen shot might help if you are still stuck??
