    But that red cross worries me. If it was a bare drive I assumed you created a partition, (usually the max space (megs) available), then you have to format it, usually NTFS, then the computer should auto assign a drive letter that is not in use.

    A conflicting drive letter is usually only a problem for existing drives attached to a different computer.

    If you can a screen shot might help if you are still stuck??

    The hard drive in the ext. enc. is out of my previous computer, it is 320GB about half full of data which I wish to retreive, it has XP OS, i will give your advice a go, will let you know what happens, Thanks, Regards Frank.

    If the drive is IDE make sure its jumpers are set to "master"
    Using "cable select" will not work with a lot of those enclosures.
