Thread: Damned dogs and laptop keys

On Friday evening last week I left my HP laptop open on the lounge chair and one of the dogs decided to jump up and run across the open keypad, tearing out a number of keys.

We have managed to restore all but one pad, which has a broken plastic mechanism which acts as a hinge for the pad. The post under the key still operates as the missing pad. The part must cost about 1,000th of a cent to produce and there will be a bin somewhere in China with a million of the things, but HP don't sell components only assemblies. So the cost of the repair will be about $500 for a new keyboard and installation.

Does anyone know somewhere that repairs HP laptops that may have a dead keypad? (Sydney preferably)

(I don't want to replace the laptop as it has a touch screen and can fold it's screen to turn the machine into a notepad, which is usefull for GPS mapping in the car.)

The easiest ones to replace are only held on by 7 or 8 screws, the more difficult ones a bit of plastic trim too. Easy one may take 5 minutes to replace, harder one 25 minutes.

One, maybe 2 little cable connectors to disconnect and reconnect (you have to be very gentle with them).

So long as you don't go poking around inside with a screwdriver or your fingers, there's little chance of damage.
