I really don't understand why Itunes' definition of backup isn't the same as the rest of the world's.

    Ahh, the magic of Mac.
    Was your phone pretty full?

    Hot tip for upgraders...

    Back up all the device
Delete enough stuff to leave at least 2gb of space
    Now upgrade
    Restore missing files. Eg, music

The new OS is a bit larger and it also needs a 'work' area to pre-install to.

Failure to leave some space before upgrade will cause issues.

Apple gives you the option to turn on or off location services as part of the set up procedure. You can also turn location services on or off for individual apps in preferences.

Big Brother would't bother making it easy to choose.

If you are concerned about Big Brother, I'd be avoiding any use of Google products.

That's a pity Simon - my upgrade was completely straightforward and seamless.... Maybe the weak link in your setup is the computer running iTunes!

Likewise. I upgraded 4 iPhones and an iPad with no data loss.

I bit the bullet and upgraded the 3GS last night.

No dramas at all and performance is just as good as it was on iOS4.

Two other mates, both run all Mac, both had similar problems to mine. Don't think you can blame the PC.

some anti virus programs GREATLY affect it

biggest culprit i have found so far is kaspersky

it needs to be turned off for the upgrade to go well.

some others are nearly as bad
