Common issue, have you tried reinstalling it, simple but often effective.
    Do you use steam?
Apparently some people have had success with disabling the anti virus software they run, so maybe thats the cause of it?
This is assuming you're talking about left 4 dead, in which case....wow...
Zombies and LandRovers, ever thought about running for prime minister?
    Hope this helps.

The l4d series is steam exclusive (ignoring consoles) if I recall correctly.

Steam has a self checking system built into it, which will go through and scan your game files and ensure they aren't corrupted. If it find one, it automatically downloads a new copy of that file. Given steam allows a lot of games to share engine files, it could well be that one of these has corrupted and is affecting both games. To run the checker, right click on the game in the menu, and look for something related to verifying game cache. I don't recall if it's another layer down in something like properties, and I'm not at my computer to check it for you. It's definitely somewhere in the right click menu though.

Also ensure your graphics card drivers are up to date, that's another good thing to go wrong!

    Good luck!

Back at my computer, just checked. You can find the self checker here:

Right click on game in list > Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game cache.

Yep, i can verify L4D and L4D2, delete client .dll, then start up STEAM and it reloads/checks as required.

doesnt stop it from crashing without a trace---
I could see that next safehouse the last time too---
    I run malwarebytes(bought) and avira(free),
I only use the Full Release versions of video drivers, nvidea 301.42 atm,,

I'll try turning malware and avira off--
