Thread: Connecting 2nd wifi router to router.

just done this....
wire up as follows

from modem to the lan internet in socket on the first router
from a lan port on the router to a lan port on the second router
turn of the dhcp in the second router
setup he first router (it should pick 192.168.1.1
manually assign the second router (192.168.1.2)
set ssID the same on both
set the frequencies on the wfif to 6+11 respectively
you can only pull of wifi repeating in this setup if the second router is dual band or can do multi channel because its got 2 wifi modules in it

Also worth checking if the Netgear router supports WDS. If so you can link both routers together using wifi.

WDS is the way to go. I have run it on netgear wireless routers in the past, don't have to now as the signal reaches everywhere fine. I was using Tomato firmware.

With WDS the second router just acts as a rely point for the first. It only needs power, no physical connection and no second wireless address.

WDS won't be compatible between a Netgear and a D-link. There is no standard when WDS is involved and many manufacturers use different techniques. It also halves the throughput.
