    Parts for iMac

    Does anyone know or can recommend a good place for purchasing parts for an iMac.

    Either my inverter is stuffed or the CCFLs. No backlight but can make out the screen if I shine a torch at the screen.

    I have found a couple of good fix-it sites, namely iFixit. Some very good reference materials for fixing Mac computers on this site and other Mac gear. Reminds me of this place.

    I have found these sites so far plus a few others.

    You'll need to take it to an authorised reseller or repair centre, can't buy parts for them like you can a windows machine. I feel a windows V apple debate coming on..lol

    For either the inverter or the CCFLs you will be able to buy generic or OEM parts rather than direct from Apple.

    I don't know which manufacturer Apple use for the screens, but it will be one of the big names - Panasonic, Samsung, etc.

    Parts for them are readily available, you'll just need to dismantle it first to find the inverter part number or the length of the CCFLs.

    And yes, I have personal experience of doing exactly what you are looking to do - I ran a business doing that back in the UK

    You need to ID the screen etc, this can often be done from the serial no.

    Anything over 5years at a mac store is considered "vintage". Will not touch it even for software issues.

    Update

    Job complete. 30 - 45 mins

    It was the inverter.

    Symptoms:

    When you start the computer you get all the usual start-up tunes.

    - Black screen (appeared black as if not on). If you shine a torch at the screen you can still see the background e.g screen saver, apple icon in top left hand side of screen.

    - Dual monitor works (if set-up).

    Purchases and costs inclusive of postage from the USA

    Tools from iFixit ($75). You could probably gets the tools you need for $15.00 . Only needed three torx screw bits for this job.

    Inverter from Encore Mac Parts ($46)
