I had the same issue a while back.
Bought a new PC, and specced a Seagate as they had a great reputation ( or so I thought ).
Lasted about 6 months. While it was away under warranty, I found out about some of their issues, so went with a WD black caviar as a replacement with the intention of demoting the Seagate to a secondary. 2 weeks later the caviar died........
Lucky dip either way IME.
That said, I'd probably go WD again.
From memory this is the 3rd Seagate that has failed in the last 3 or 4 years. Makes me happy I do regular backups as this one has all my trip notes/photos etc on it.
Managed to back it all up last night and also have a separate backup from last month on another drive.

+1 for WD Red
All drives will have warranty, and none should be trusted as far as you could throw them. I had a WD black last 12 days, total running time would have been less than one full day.
Had two Seagate 7200.11s RMA'd due to the firmware issue, one bricked.
They're all as bad as each other. If you're looking to buy one for storage, you SHOULD be looking at 2 so you aren't entrusting data to a single drive only.
don't know where you lot are buying all these crap drives but i rarely see one back that i have sold.
probably seen 20 dead seagates in the last 12 years and 10 western digitals out of the ones i have sold, which would be hundreds.
i get all mine from tier one distributors.
there has been a definite drop off in quality since the floods in thailand it has to be said.
havent seen anything as bad as the run of ibm death-stars a few years back before they sold out to hitachi.
that was a shocker and caused immense grief.

i had a basic wd 3tb and it stopped working after 6 months and we had so much on there.
It had 3 years warranty i think so we got a new one and just being very careful with it now.It is mainly for backing things up and putting movies on it.
