we get this problem at work occasionally when trying to run the main computer screen and the projector (normally on visiting laptops that get plugged in)
if the computer trying to use the projector sees a projector and doesnt have a driver for it or is configured to use the projector as a duplicate or secondary monitor then the projector is being told to display whatever the computers primary output is configured to.
if the projector is trying to display in say 1025x780 and is only getting a 640x480 you wind up with an about half size picuture on the projected display. This is a problem with the way that powerpoint uses secondary displays for running shows in full screen if the 2 screens are different sizes and havent been successfully permanently setup in the windows display configuration .
the best workaround I've found for this problem is just to set the projector as the primary display, the main screen as the secondary screen then set power point to use the second display to display the presenters note and use the main display for the full screen presentation.
If that doesnt work disable presenters notes and just use the projector as the main display.
