Telstra technical department- helped my windows

Nice lady called from the "Telstra technical department". Offered to help remove the spamming software from my computer before my internet is disconnected.

She asked I turn on my windows and enter a URL she gave me.

I told her my windows was not responding. She talked me through a reboot process.

When i suggested the reboot process did not work on my windows she tried another restart process. Neither worked on my windows and assured her it wouldn't work on the glass in her windows either

I did not try turning on my windows!!

I get them using expletives to me. Much more satisfying.

    Tough Loneranger.

I did ask the poor lady if she had any kids. She was a bit surprised as I said I hope her kids did not have to do the job she does as it must make her feel trying to rip people off. She honestly thought about it and did not ask to access my computers nor did she hang up instantly as I expected her to do.

Like low level drug dealers I assume the real criminals making money from phone scams are not the often very poor sods on the end of the phone trying to scam me.
You could substitute low life for low level in the drug dealers. Being both low life and low level doesn't make them the real criminals just stupid prats played for fools by high level low life drug dealers.

    "I'm from Telstra" Scam

I haven't had this particular one before.

A gentleman with a sub-continent accent rang to tell me that he was from Telstra and that I had some problems with my internet. I had nothing better to do, so I went along with him for a while.

He wanted me to run a command that would have allowed me to run a program in Windows, but of course it does nothing in Linux.

Usually telling these people that I am running Linux and their suggested commands do nothing is enough to make them give up, but this bloke persisted.

He wanted me to run a program that supposedly shows that my computer has problems, but it is just a markup validation service.

Then he wanted me to download Teamviewer. When I told him that I wasn't prepared to install a program that gave anyone access to my computer, he insisted that my computer had problems and said that Telstra would cut off my internet access and he hung up.

I managed to waste quite a bit of his time by getting him to spell out everything that he wanted me to type. I think that was what irritated him.

I love stringing these guys along! I pretend to type in what he says to then when he asks what is on my screen I tell him what my screen saver is. Last time I did this I had him and his team confused for over 15 minutes with him pulling his hair out. He then asked me if I was running a Mac or PC. I said I was on a Mac, but I wasn't. He eventually hung up. Another half hour wasted.

I usually manage at least twenty minutes on the "Windows" symbol on my screen - there isn't one, nearest thing is a KDE/Mint logo. And the keys he asks me to press do nothing, which gets him puzzled - not in the script.

Last time I had the 'Telstra man' call me, I immediately told him that I was so glad that he called as I had been getting so many calls from scammers telling me that I had trouble with my computer and I was sure that he could do something to stop them calling.

I didn't delay him for long as he hung up fairly quickly .......... but that was some time ago and I haven't had a call since.

I just tell them that I am on the do not call register and that as I do not have a business relationship with Telstra they are in breach of the law and can be fined hundreds of thousands of dollars - that is normally followed by a long bit of quiet on the phone where they are clearly confused and they then hang up.
