Just an important announcement. Currently there are very aggressive virus emails circulating currently that are bypassing all anti-spam and anti-virus software platforms.
These emails are coming in the form of Australia Post, Coles, Bunnings, Woolworths etc ? mostly non work related ? all with the angle that there is a voucher of a delivery waiting for you.
If you come across these emails, please DELETE THEM IMMEDIATELY. If the software that it asks you to download is run, it will encrypt all files on your local PC and network, and the only way to recover them is to pay ransom money, or recover from backup.
I'll send examples and more info shortly, but for the time being, PLEASE ENSURE YOUR STAFF DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR RUN ANYTHING, FROM ANY LINK, IN ANY EMAIL

Ours was actually a brute force attack through the network router....they came in more than likely on the back of someone else logging in to the network

SupporterI had a email from QLD Transport the other day thanking me for updating my email details & asking me to click on the link, but I have not been in contact with QLD Transport so I deleted it. I have also been getting lots of emails lately telling me I have won competitions I have not entered, I think I have won up to $10000 in the last two weeks I WISH also deleted.

IT manager sent out a warning about these email scams. Legit email, but same structure - for more information click here. I had a good laugh and pointed it out to him; he was confused at first and when he finally got it said how do you send out emails now to assist people.

I don't want people to ignore basic security when accessing email, but...
There is also a form of malware that doesn't actually do anything but tries to get people to send warnings to everyone they know, wasting everyone's time and tying up network resources. Although this form of malware is not as common as it was years ago, increased bandwidth makes it very hard for an email being sent to cause disruptions, it still exists because some people get their jollies making everyone panic. They love it when they get sent their own warning by a well intentioned contact.
I delete any email that is in the slightest bit suspicious, logging on to my email accounts via a web browser. I also divert all my email accounts to gmail, and download from gmail. Google's spam filters are amongst the best, although you have to weigh up whether you want your email to go through Google.
