A backup of the OS, is usually not bootable.
Hi All,
I just purchased a 2TB Seagate Expansion USB drive to use for Windows backup purposes on my wife's PC
When connected to the already running computer it is detected quite normally by Windows 10 & I found it quite routine to set up File History.
My problem is that when I try to boot up the machine from cold for the next session with the drive connected, the machine stops at the M/B splash screen - won't load the OS!
The only way to start the machine is to disconnect the external USB drive, restart, & then all is normal.
I have tried checking the CMOS for boot options, thinking that the PC might be trying to boot up from the USB disk, but all seems to be correctly set still for bootup from the internal c: drive.
Has anyone experienced this problem before? I must add that I can plug this drive into my crappy 7 year old Lenovo laptop, running Ubuntu, from cold, & there is no problem. It also runs fine with my own, newer PC, also running Windows 10, & this boots up fine from cold with it connected.
There must be some configuration problem with my wife's PC to cause this problem.
Any ideas? All information would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Lionel

been my experience that this problem is generally caused by low voltage
plug the thing into a usb port directly on the motherboard (on the back plane) and that will sometimes fix it...
that said, i have seen some boxes where i simply cant solve it and sell them a usb expansion board with switches on it so you can easily isolate the drive when needed...

I agree this can be a problem, but I've tried all the USB ports available with the same result, & the external drive has its own power supply.
I feel it has to be some BIOS or CMOS setting. I might see if I can upgrade the BIOS, though the M/B is a few years old.
Funny how the old laptop is absolutely fine with it!
