well done...
My $2 Qnap TS439Pro II ( with 4 1TB drives I had lying around-) has responded to a touch of TLC,, been upgraded to 2GB of ram,, ( and a blow job,,) and a 36 month firmware upgrade, which has allowed me to go wireless,, I think.
While it was on ethernet ( to my surviving W7 machine) I got the qnap wireless to connect to our House modem, (YAY!!) so now the little steel cube sits on top of the fridge in the corner,,
Should i have connected an old modem by ethernet to the qnap?(on the fridge in the corner--)
and just linked through that?
yes its supposedly for storage, (though it has a 50GB limit per file,,)
clear as mud,,
future/current connection to the cube is the problem/question..

You have a wireless router?

Yep!
Are you trying to access the NAS wirelessly, or are you trying to set up the NAS wirelessly(as opposed to an eth connection)?
If the former, then you shouldn't have any issues no matter where you connect it in the network.
I have mine connected to a switch(via multiple eth cables), switch is connected to a wireless repeater, which in turn is connected to my router and have no issues connecting to the NAS wirelessly.
Only wireless device I connect to it with is my Galaxy Tab tablet.
Used to connect to it with a Windows tablet as well(but that battery doesn't hold any longer and is no longer used).
Note that passwords will allow/disallow connecting to the various levels within the NAS box itself.
if you're trying to connect the QNAP to the rest of the network via a wireless connection(as opposed to a cabled connection) .. sorry can't help there.
Also, this will make for a fairly slow connection to all devices.
I would suggest that one of the better locations to try to keep the NAS connected to the rest of the network would be a cabled connection to the modem/router that connects to the WAN side for your network.
That is, if any device in your network can connect to the internet(ie. via the modem/router) and the NAS is connected to that same modem/router, then they should have easy access to the NAS wirelessly(if that's how the device connects).
If you can't get that, then it's the permissions settings in the NAS box that stops them accessing it.
My box(TS-435A) is directly connected to my TV(HDMI tho) now, originally I had it connected to my router (via cable). Kids like to watch their movies and stuff like that.
When on the router via two cabled connection and using link aggregation, I noticed a significant slow down in access speeds to my PC(also cabled).
I can easily get 60-70Mb/s speeds from the NAS to the PC(most of my photos are in the 90+Mb size range) .. so one image transferred from PC to NAS or other way around would take about a sec or 2.
When the kids would watch a movie, because the movie had to be streamed from the NAS via the router to the TV, photo transfers would be more like 30Mb/s(if I was lucky) .. usually a bit slower .. ie. frustrating!
So I connected the QNAP directly to the TV(as it has a HDMI connection) and now the movies arent' streamed, they're played directly from the NAS(it's basically a PC) ... which frees up the network bandwidth.
The only device that connects to my QNAP wirelessly directly is a wireless keyboard/mousepad thingy which makes the QNAP a much better PC device(on the TV).
I have cabled one of these to the qnap-
Its a TG797
added a second usb adaptor to the re-purposed NAS PC and bingo it all works,,
for around 5 minutes then the internet side asks for a page login (not the normal wireless password)
its very close though,

Peter, ideally you would have the following:
- AS AK83 said above, aim to connect the NAS directly to the network via cable, avoid wireless as it will adversely affect data throughput.
- get your electronic equipment as far away from that fridge as you can. electronics and (particularly IT equipment) do not like interference introduced into the power supply by the compressors starting and stopping(not just fridges but washing machines, dryer, mirowaves etc)... or plug it into a line filter.
Now, the log in page, what's it for, the TG797 or the NAS? In these cases I work back from the most basic configuration. and then gradually add in the additional components making sure things keep working each step of the way.
Can you do run down on how the NAS connected IE what interfaces are between it and the network...
If you already have a DHCP service running on your network make sure to disable the service on the NAS (unless you are running it through a USB port in which case that will not matter).
Cheers,
Sean

Nice,,
two things, time is irrelevant so wireless speed is fine,(which i think was around 200kbs)
and the fridge is not working!! its basically a plinth near a power point! but its a great place for a fan and a qnap.
When it asks for the login it takes me to the "House" NBN modem,, I cant actually enter any details as the modem password is already there....
None of this is earth shatteringly important, but when I get Franken-puter up and running again I'll know how to swap it all over.
I cant seem to get DHCP working on this WIN7 machine,

OK, good!
1. what are you doing when you get the log in screen and on what device (assume I'm an idiot ... more detail is better)?
2. The WIN 7 Computer would usually be a DHCP Client meaning it would normally be assigned an IP address by a DHCP server(normally your router). Is this what you are expecting to happen? You are not intending that your Win7 Computer be the DHCP server or, are you? if you are doing the "usual" thing then:
Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties. Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option and click the Properties button. If you want to enable DHCP, make sure Obtain an IP address automatically is selected, as well as Obtain DNS server address automatically.
Cheers,
Sean
