Sounds like you're using that TG797 modem(in the image) as a wireless link to the home network?
When you say 'house modem' this sounds like the main modem connection to the outside world AND your home network too? ... but not the same one as the TG797 connected to the NAS?

And I'm confused as to the purpose of the second USB adaptor to the NAS.

The simplest way to connect the NAS wirelessly to the rest of the network would be to have it connected via cable to the main router for the entire home network.
It requires no other connection other than the power cable.
From there, you can do anything else you want with or to it.
Only other suggestion would be to fix it's IP address in the network to, by setting it in the router.

If you can't physically do that and you're trying to connect it wirelessly via the TG797 device(in the image), then the TG797 has to be set to bridge mode or wireless repeater mode or whatever with almost all other routing services off(which the main house router/modem).

If you could do a sort of diagram-ish thing of the network topology of how it's connected/connecting.

The other question which seems open to interpretation here, is: are you using a USB wireless dongle on the QNAP too?

My apologies to all.. trial explanation here---
There are 3 separate systems running here,,
    House NBN modem downstairs.
Upstairs is my repurposed W7 machine connected to house modem via wireless.
Upstairs on fridge qnap with TG797 attached. The tg797 is connected by wifi to one usb dongle on W7
Hopefully that scrapes some mud off

Sounds like you're using that TG797 modem(in the image) as a wireless link to the home network? No. see above.
    No, wireless to
When you say 'house modem' this sounds like the main modem connection to the outside world AND your home network too? ... but not the same one as the TG797 connected to the NAS? Correctamundo!

And I'm confused as to the purpose of the second USB adaptor to the NAS.
The 3 seperate systems need two dongles upstairs to function. At least the interweb told me I cant run two wireless inputs into one dongle?

The simplest way to connect the NAS wirelessly to the rest of the network would be to have it connected via cable to the main router for the entire home network. Agree but not feasable.

no, connected via cable to TG797.
It all seems to be behaving itself this morning,,

I would have thought it's best to have the TG797 connected by wifi directly to the house modem.

But I still think that the best way to connect the old QNAP would be(obviously if it's possible!!) to connect it directly to the house NBN modem .. which I also assume is a router(which they mostly are).
All the QNAP needs to connect to the NBN modem will be one power cord, and an ethernet cable(2 would be better too tho).

    [NBN modem] = [QNAP]

    |

[Win7 PC] and all other devices connect to NBN modem wired/wirelessly etc ...
(pe. that's supposed to be a pseudo diagram the = is not equals, it's a double ethernet cable connection from NBN modem to QNAP(it should have two eth ports, and you'd set up link aggregation)

They just access the QNAP whichever way they access the NBN modem.

Although, in saying that 8Mb/s is pretty good considering you commented it's upstairs(ie. through floors and stuff!
But it depends on your needs too tho. If all your files are small, 8Mb/s is good.
If you end up using the QNAP (say) as a movie repository, and you then want to watch movies off it, 8Mb/s ain't going to cut it if you want to actually watch those movies! (ie. it'll just be st-u-tt-ter-y...)

not likely anything will go downstairs--
it quite likely will store movies,, but not for playback,,
I'd like to be able to just sync files and not have to drag the original to the Qsync folder,,
I dont think this MB likes handling two wireless feeds,,

Great lil free program for syncing stuff is FreeFileSync (for Windows, not the QNAP)

Just create a network file folder in Windows, call the network drive Z (or whatever make most sense to you) in Windows.
Then use FFS(sounds funny abbreviated in that way ) to view/sync the folders that contain the files you want synced.
    The interface is very intuitive.

I don't use the QNAP software at all, and barely use any of the QNAP apps on the QNAP itself.

One strong recommendation I'll also make is to backup the QNAP. Not necessarily the data on the drives, but the operating system itself.
My TS453A had a major problem very early on. One HDD bay stopped working completely. That is, lost the drive on the QNAP, but not the data itself.
Sent it back to QNAP/store, they checked it and replaced it.

I assumed that being the same brand/model device, that what was on the device and drives was just going to be a plug and play restoration.
That is, plug all drives back into the same slots on the replacement TS453A and it'll just take off again from where I last stopped it.
    Nope!

Had to reset everything all over again from scratch for some unknown reason.
All data(mainly a couple of terabytes of photos) had to be replaced drive by drive all over again once the QNAP booted itself back up again(over the old OS install).
The replacement TS453A just wouldn't recognise the data that was already (backed up) on the other 3 drives, even tho the same model device created those shares!

So now I back up the QNAP onto the USB drive attached to its USB port.

Yep settings. Should be a bin file.

Sorry to confuse, but OS, as in I meant backing up the OS settings(the bin file) ... not so much backing up the data on the drives.

In my situation above, had I backed up the OS settings file, I'd have had a much quicker re-start up with the replacement box .. and not have to populate all three drives once again.

ps. from memory I think the backup file is small .. as in something like a couple of hundred kbs only.

Hopefully that washes off any mud I just sprayed everywhere too.

Yeah! anywhere really, but not on any of the 4 internal HDDs on the actual device.

I save a copy on the external USB AND a another copy in a folder on my PC.
