True, but in my case it usually doesn't announce that it has backed up. It is more likely to tell me when it hasn't for a while.

If it's an IPhone Then usually a selection at initial startup and if you just skip past it without saying no it'll automatically do it I think??

You can disable this in settings,
Go into settings and you should see you name or initials with Apple ID, iCloud etc.... click on this and go to this section

And turn it off

Curious. Why wouldn't u want to back it up to iCloud? It's protected with 256bit encryption. So unless ur holding national classified defence secrets that ur intending to sell to China, u shouldn't have to worry about anyone hacking ur backup.

Jim, I do not have an android but I would think the change you seek is probably in a "settings" area as others have implied.

Have you tried tapping on the "cloud" symbol to see if you are offered alternatives ?

I wouldn't want to use so-called "cloud" storage either - it'll end up like photo-bucket, charging you heaps to get your own info back.

Apart from the fact that it could enable problems such as identity theft, when the cloud storage is compromised, the most likely reason for not wanting it to back up to the cloud is that it could use quite substantial amounts of data if you have a lot of pictures. If you have a phone plan with small data allowances, or if you are travelling overseas where roaming costs can be horrendous, you could get a case of bill shock. If, like me, you have satellite internet, and your phone connected to your wifi, it could use your month's data allowance in a day - and NBN sets rigid limits on satellite data.

I'm guessing you've linked your phone to your gmail account, so it will be doing all things Google.

Personally I'd leave it that way, if you get a new phone or have to reset this one it will be a lot easier.

If, however, you don't want to do the Google thing open the settings (its the cog icon at the top right of the screen when you wipe down) and when you scroll down through the settings you'll find user and backup.

The cloud icon will show where your data is being stored, such as Google and Dropbox.

Backup and reset will allow you to turn off the backup.

Accounts will show which online accounts you have enabled on the phone.
