    Recovering Deleted Files

I had some pics and some videos sitting in the recycle bin (WIN 10 Home) - was going to delete but changed my mind but not moved them back.

System maintenance cleared the recycle bin so I have lost the files.

I have used some software called RECUVA and it does recover the files to an external drive but while it says all files are good they will not open with the system saying format not recognised despite them being .jpg and .mp4.

So any suggestions to a good file recovery program.

Oh does a backup WindowsImageBackup bring everything back or just systems files - I do have that backup from 10 days ago but I will only use it as a last resort.

    Thanks

well Recuva is virtually useless on files that have been intentionally deleted, either by your self or by the operating system.
Windows removes part of the file association on deletion. Also the space is subject to being written to, almost immediately.

I would suggest the image backup, it will restore the cycle bin files.

Yes thanks - I agree - I certainly would not purchase this product as it just does not work.

I am reluctant to use the image backup unless as a last resort, as it will have other ramifications. So thinking about it over night and possible solution came to mind - these are old files and were on my old laptop - I still have that laptop but I have wiped all information off it as I just use it for car tuning software - however thinking about it I remember I changed the hard drive in it when I got a message that the then drive was about to fail. I still have that drive and as I removed it before it failed it still works - connecting it up the files were there so have copied them over.

There is more than one way to skin a cat and of course if that had not worked, I still have the image backup.

Oh the reason I do not have an actual backup program is the one I was using just would not backup and the windows 10 backup product is hopeless. So looking for a backup program that saves the whole drive. In the past I used the backup program and the image backup once a week and worked well but that was Win 7 and Win 10 is crap.

    Thanks for the response

A Mac running Time Machine will back everything thing up easily to an external hard drive on a daily basis or whatever you like.

The older Macbook 3.1 that I have could run Windows totally or be split with the apple system so I assume the Time Machine function could back up Windows stuff as well.

It's kinda scary / funny when you open TM with the external backup connected for the first time and the screen is layered with every desktop (including every application, email, etc) from every day that you did a backup. (it's like a copy of what was on the drive at that time)

Flame away if anyone disagrees................. it works for me and I'm happy to learn!

There are a number of free backup / imaging package about for Windows. EaseUS ToDo is just one, there are others.

I suppose the advantage of something like EaseUS over Windows imaging backup is with Windows imaging back up, if you want to restore something from the image I think it's all or nothing proposition, ie you must restore the entire disk image even if you just want one file. Whereas with EaseUS you have a choice of restoring a single file, directory, partition or entire drive from the image. So from a EaseUS backup image, your specific files would have been easily restored by finding the recycle bin folder from within the image, opening it and just restoring the files you wanted from within the image of the recycle bin.

Yeah, it's kinda funny because all I've ever used are Macbooks, later linked to iPhones, and I dunno how to use a mouse. People crack up when they watch me try.

How'd you go with the 101 fuel gauge sender issue BTW?

What I was thinking about in my previous post re: Macs and Time Machine, is that if the files you made were on the HD on a particular date and you'd backed them up to TM, then they'd still be there even though you'd deleted them, you just need to go 'back in time'.
