    Computer security issues

Hi all, i have the latest edition of Trend Mirco Internet Security. I purchased the edition with three licences to so it can be installed on 3 different comuters with the same CD key. Its on the new laptop, and will be on the old one before i sell it, i am now trying to install it on the PC now it is fixed but every time i put the CD in it auto runs and then the whole computer freezes. I have uninstalled norton which used to be on there and its totally gone. I read the instructions on how to install it and i need to disable the windows firewall as the software has its own but when ever i try and open the windows security centre it does the same thing as when i try and run the internet security software, it freezes the whole computer, in both cases i cant even bring up the task manager and end task. Is this being caused by a virus that was already on the computer, i cant work it out. Matt

Have you got XP-SP2 loaded? If you had Nortons loaded prior to installing SP2 this I would reinstall/repair SP2 again now that Nortons is removed. Then put the Trend Micro software on.

Yep SP2 is installed the version of windows i have had that, also spent 6hrs (dial-up) downloading and installing 57meg of windows security updates and the Ver 7 or IE, so windows is a new as it can be upgrades wise. I downloaded the Norton uninstaller and ran it to remove it, and i still cant get into the windows security centre or install trend. Its got me buggered. Matt

Can't think of anything else at present sounds like a windows issue though.

Thanks for the prompt about downloading...I'm going to replace my computer in the next few weeks and so it will be XP, SP2, config, download, config, download. Transfer all the software licences etc.... I think 57MB is getting away lightly

I had a very similar problem on my Media centre... Found a package on the net that has a free trial. Package is called Trojan Hunter. Sure enough. It shows up with and deletes a couple of nasty lil sods. Hey BINGO! I can then install my anti-virus... I'm at work so sorry I dun have link to the above.

The Asus driver you need for your USB can be downloaded from Asus.com, with a link to your mobo being there usually. Good luck mate... Keith.

From my IT friend. Norton is a pig. You will need to get into the Windows Registry, and hand delete everything relating to Norton. As regards the Windows firewall, disable in Security Centre, and keep it disabled, if you plan to run some other firewall. Or, use Windows firewall and NOTHING else. NOD32 is a far better AV package for XP than the new Norton. Also free, with 14 months free updates. Even better, do not rid yourself of the old computer. Install Linux to it, then set that machine as your internet gateway, using the internal security that Linux provides, to act as a full and proper firewalled internet gateway device.

As for MS Update? Last time I updated my MS box, it took almost 2 weeks to get it stable again, and I just don't go down that path anymore. Just install the service packs as they come out, and have good AV protection.
If you have Broadband, then your Router should have good firewalling capacity anyhow. Most Routers, run on an embedded Linux system, and as such use IP tables, as the built in firewall at OS kernel level.

    Shorty.

Make sure you do have XP service pack 2 installed. I've had no end of trouble in the past few days with several computers and service pack 2. Tells me it's installing, etc. then find out hasn't actually happened.

Control panel-system should show up that service pack 2 is installed. If not you may need to go to Microsoft Update website and click on administrator settings to get back to it.

To get rid of the registry entries for Norton after uninstalling, download Spybot S&D -great for getting rid of spyware. From mode menu choose advanced mode. From the left hand bar choose Tools, then System Internals.
This runs a check for truncated entries in the registry.

    Back up your registry first.

    Cheers
    Simon
