Sorry you had hassles with VLC. I've tried searching for info on the problem you experienced but can't find anything useful at present. I'm not sure, but it's possible that VLC needs Direct-X installed to work. I can't think of anything else right now but I'll keep thinking about it and post if I can come up with an answer.
