    In board computer project

    Greetings fellow computer geeks !

I have a proposition - I have an Acer travel mate 380 lap top that has what appears to be a buggered screen it works however is just not "lit up" - get the room light on the right angle and she works fine, - have replaced the harness and it didnt work - also has the inverter replaced...to no avail.

It does however output through the back to an external monitor - i would like to re build the unit - that is take it from its lappy body and adapt it to a box - sort of ruggedise it if you will - and adapt a smallish lcd touch screen for the monitor ....

is there any computer minded people in sydney that would be interented in joining the project - ill pay for the bits - so long as i get to help!! and see what goes where ...

Did you check the lamp behind the screen?

I'd like to do a car computer project. I quite like the one that jsp (also on this forum) did - see http://rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic.php't=5069

I've got nearly all the bits except the 7" touchscreen.

I've got a similar problem with my old Toshiba laptop. I replaced the screen as the lamp was alight but it made no difference. In my case, I think it's the motherboard even though it works on an external screen.

Replacing the tube isn't hard but one has to be game enough to open up the case around the screen.

Sounds like the backlight. Should be fine with an external LCD screen

I have no fear of opening the case - in fact ( now kids dont do this at home ) I have had it open , apart and running.... still cant see the light....

hmm got the puter out today and played - booted up - light working... it appears that there may be some "hard fault" as after a while the light goes out and function F6 and two taps on the pressure pad brings it on for a little while .... any ideas anyone ?

is it possible that it's set to hibernate after a few mins or set with a blank/black screen saver and the taps are waking it up?

Leave it in the lappy body, no point ruggedising it at all really. The hard drive should withstand a few years of city driving and the battery setup is really great and simple for having the unit shutdown and startup gracefully without oober expensive controllers etc. Just get a laptop car PS and make sure its got plenty of watts and go from there, preferably don't use a 240 inverter too much RF noise in cheapo ones!

Go the biggest screen you can fit in without it looking silly or you will forever be cursing youself trying to read it!

All just my views not to be taken as gospel
