If I was at home I could talk you through it - I have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router.
If you don't get anywhere, PM me and I can contact you tomorrow during the day if you like (I'm on arvo shift for the next few days).

hi there all' today i recieved a couple of items with the hope of staring up a home network to share the internet connection aroud the house.
I bought a Dlink DI624+ router and a sdio Sd wireless network card for my navman 570, my wifes lappy - a medion has builtin wireless capability,
I have had moderate success in setting up the router in that i can (hardwire) connect the PC to one of the pots on it and use it to pass internet through, i dont seem to be able to get the wireless side of things to work - any links to any hints ?

Wireless is a git - great when it's working - a right bast**d when it's not.
A couple of areas to look at - in the wireless set up make sure that the dchp is enables, set up the laptop to assign IP's from dchp.
Next is the encription, for set up purposes I'd switch it off - get it running - play with it, then set up the security/encription.
took me 5 mins to set up the wired side and about 24 hours to get the wireless side working properly.
I've got a D-Link DI-634M so PM me if you need any help. Main things to look for in the setup are the security settings so no one can just jump on your network.

I forgot to say that I can't get my iPAQ to work to my wireless network.
The laptops are fine.

The easiest way to get wireless going is to use defaults and no security first, and when everything connects, secure it one change at a time...some devices from different vendors do things different ways, and getting a non-working set-up working is a damn site harder than changing one thing on a working set-up and breaking it....
So, not knowing the device in questions, you basically need a few things on a wireless box.
Wireless mode - B, G, N, you might even have A, or any funny name liek G+, Turbo, etc. Set both to G (Or N if you have it) as preference, and lastly B if that's your only option.
SSID - name of the wireless network. Safe to leave default unless a neighbour is in range and has the same manufacturer's equipment.
Broadcast SSID - default should be "Yes" or "On", and while some like to turn this off to "hide" their network, it makes finding it with troublesome clients a PITA, and does sod all to deter a decent hacker with the right tools anyway, as they will find the name in 10 seconds!
Security - leave this off or disabled until you're working. When it's all running, turn it on on the router and one device, and use WPA2 as a preferences if all devices have the option (Fully patched XP does, Vista does, no clue on MAC's and the like), WPA as next best, and WEP if nothing else is doable. With WPA, go with PSK (Pre-shared key) and type a password in the same on both the router and client. With WEP, devices often allow you to enter the key and sometimes a passphrase that gets converted to a key - this is often done differently between different manufacturers, so go with the key. Entry might be decimal or hex, so choose the same option each end!!
Don't play with things like MAC or Hardware address filtering - they're useless as a security precaution, and only cause the owner grief when you've forgotten you've set it in a years time and can't figure out why a new laptop won't connect!
Oh, and make sure wireless is actually turned on - this is often a check-box on the router, and sometimes a switch on a laptop.
Most routers have a log or status page which will tell you which clients are connected, and what the problem is to some extent on ones that are trying and failing....
