There is only one thing preventing me from going to linux.

    Solidworks.
Not only has noone been successful in getting it to install and run on a linux system, for full functionality it requires microsoft excel.

    Dammit.

There might be, but a google of "fedora solidworks" pulls up nothing useful.
I had (still have but it's useless) a version of linux that I paid for which you could install windows software into.

But on my laptop the list of hardware that didn't work was almost bigger than the stuff that did work (no wireless, no modem etc) and that release has since been surpassed and is unsupported.
    Xandros it was.

I'm running XUBUNTU on an ancient Pentium II.
I needed a few of my old Windows programs, so I installed WINE. All the important programs work.
I also installed Microsoft Office through WINE and so far everything including Excel has done everything I have tried.

When I installed XUBUNTU, I already had Windows ME on one of the hard drives.
I reformatted the main HD to get rid of a lot of junk that had accumulated and just installed XUBUNTU. Without my having to actually do anything, it recognises that ME is there and offers the choice of OS every time I boot up.
It did exactly the same thing when I had earlier tried UBUNTU without formatting Drive C:. It just recognised that XP was there and automatically offered dual boot.
I didn't have to do anything.

PS Just in case Ron is reading this post. Yes there are still some of us still alive who try to remember that gerunds require pronouns in the possessive case. Pity about the split infinitive though. Suppose I should say, "Without my actually having to do anything...".

Ooops, I'm beginning to think that like Ron I have too much time on my hands.

There are a few Windows emulators for Linux,
Also there is Crossover that will run most Adobe programs.
Wine will run a lot of windows appz
Also the is VMware server that is free , you can install any Windows O/S on it and run windows within linux.

If you want to run a system Dual boot, Linux and another O/cs eg Xp etc.
You have to install Xp 1st then the linux o/s, let Linux control the MBR with Grub and you'll have a selection of which O/s you wish to boot to on the splash screen
Vista dual boot is another method.
There is plenty of info on Ubuntu or Kubuntu forums, the ammount of info on these O/S will take years to read there's that much since they are so popular.

No I haven't, but others have tried Wine, VMware and others without success.
There are people with far more expertise in this area than me working on it, hopefully they'll be really vocal when they find a solution.

Or even better if solidworks writes a linux version and let me transfer my new $20k license across.
