    Slow AULRO Site

A while back I became a subscriber and hoped that the site would run a bit faster .

It seems to get even slower for me to the point that it is almost impossible to use - each page just takes so long to open and close. I notice that the ads seem to take ages to load and slow things right down - I appreciate that advertising is very important to funding however if they slow everything down then a balance need to be reached.

Can we still have the ads and also quick opening and closing pages.

    Cheers

the adverts have no speed impact unless you are using a very low spec system.

or use the archive version of the site so it loads quicker ...

i am still working on the new server but have had very limited time to do anything on the noisy mongrel thing

I have just switched to Optus with 20Mbs and the download seems to stick at 50% -80% on some pages while others are speed of light.
There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to threads that stall.
If I immediately check a known fast site like BOM it downloads at the speed of light, so I do not think its my connection.

because pages are mainly dynamic it seems to act oddly on some optus connected services sometimes. i think it has something to do with the size of the link to pipe networks interconnects. like it is dropping packets due to congestion or some sort of rate limiting.

i see very few of these issues on telstra but they have their own issues at times.

for the last four weeks or so the site has been hammered by ssh login/breakin attempts (and that is one reason i havent started switching in the new server) and that maybe part of the congestion problem.

Darn, I was just about to say I think I have fixed it by disabling Firefox add ons , then I had to cancel and refresh to get the Reply window up!

Does this congest the site? It seems to work as if you cancel then refresh the page comes up quickly some/most of the time.

There is an issue on the Mozilla site about slow downloads on version 3.04, so maybe its a combination of problems.
IE7 seems a little quicker but works in a different way, with the barometer crawling up rather than freezing at 70-80%

That is what I do to make the site go a bit faster.

The reason I raised the issue of the ads is that when my system says "transferring data from AULRO" it is going reasonable quickly - but comes to an almost stop when it says "waiting for ad.yieldmanager.com" - when it finally disappears the ads then come up.

I can't really say how bad it is - everything is bad with my ISP! Just how bad became apparent yesterday when I got "shaped" to 56kbps instead of 1024kbps, after running out of data allowance. It is almost impossible to tell the difference!

The problem is not the connection speed - speed tests show the download speed is somewhere near what it should be, although upload speed is usually well below the 512kbps it is supposed to be. And ping time is around one second, as expected.

But the problem is that, as shown by the system monitor, I request a web page, and it takes a minimum of about fifteen seconds before I get a response, and sometimes up to several minutes. It does not seem to matter much what website I am looking at, although ones that are made of a number of bits obviously take longer, a lot longer. Some websites tend to give up on me and I have to reload to get them, sometimes several times.

I have been complaining about this to my ISP for nearly two months, without much effect. Anyone got any suggestion as to what the problem is?

I dont have too many problems with the site even when slowed to dialup.

Am on tpg adsl2 and regularly use a couple of clean up/ optimize tools on the computer.

If you havent used one of these before you will probably be surprised at the difference it makes.
