Unicode font. A font where a combination of key storkes gives you a special character. In Word (etc.) you insert a symbol like the e in touché and it can be ready by any Vist/XP/mac machine that operates a keyboard!

Keyboard Shortcuts for special characters
Basically you hold down the Alt key and use the numeric keypad to type a number then release the Alt key.
