Upgrading to Windows 7 or Snow Leopard?

Just to help all those out there I have included the official microsoft upgrade chart, by way of explanation (and quite frankly it needs a lot of explanation). You can read about it here at deciphering windows 7 upgrades.

Here is one for the mac users too.

The pricing is unclear for Microsoft but you can bet most of those boxes will have different and big prices in them. The last I heard was you'll pay around $50 aus for Snow Leopard.

    HEY HEYYY!!!
I can do an "in-place upgrade"!

I guess that means only two false starts before it works and half a day instead of a full day to perform

I actually went to the beta version of win7 before jumping to ubuntu. I had to do a clean install as i was going from XP, which didn't particularly worry me, and the OS itself was pretty solid from the little use i gave it.
Downsides were it was incredibly slow to load, and networking this machine with what was my Vista laptop on wifi, was a pig! The differences between 7 and vista were enough to make it a real pain.

The amount of peripheral support for w7 at the mo is an issue too.

    Never again.

    cheers

i aint spending another cent with m/s upgrade , every time you upgrade the computer runs slower so then you have to buy a new computer , enough is enough

Although if you're a Power Mac PPC user like myself you need to factor in $4.5K for a new Mac Pro to get Snow Leopard. Apple is very good at not caring about customers on older platforms.

btw my upgrade to windows 7 on my pc laptop was entirely painless and quite impressive really...

a couple device driver issues but they were a known quanity prior to the upgrade

I am happy with my XP Pro and will not consider "downgrade" to the new versions.
Just imaging the problems in installing again all the software for photography again and the filters is enough to put me off

I have been using windows 7 RC1 since it came out (couple months) and its great.
People who are saying its very slow to load are either running a dinosaw or comparing it to something half the size. It boots alot quicker than vista does and is generally a bit zippyer for most programs.

Networking specifcaly file sharing I did find a little tricky this was because 7 wanted to use some homegroup thing which looks pretty good but is only compatable with other 7 machines. Turning that off and it worked ok.

Also 7 has quite a few usefull features and works well without any drivers.

A few of us in that boat.

I've been messing with various versions of 7 since the early beta's... and without any question it is a HUGE improvement on Vista. I've currenly got the RC loaded on 2 machines - both of which are running perfectly with no need to stuff around with drivers etc - it detected everything on both machines.

As far as networking goes one lives in a home workgroup quite happily while the other is giving me no grief on a corporate domain.

I've not had 1 networking issue at all... Vista on the other hand

If I had to pay for it I would buy it.... but only with a new machine - I wouldn't be racing out throwing money at MS only for the software upgrade.

As for Snow Leopard...yeh it's heaps cheaper than the Windows upgrade.... but don't forget it's bugger all use on 90% of PC hardware.... I am however looking forward to trying in at some point on my Imac though..

The way I see it - Apple make their money from the hardware .. MS make it from software.

As long as neither gets perfect and leaves me an area to earn a living.. I'm happy
