Just jam some wire in the coil output? Wouldn't it just spark to the chassis? Coathanger wire or doesn't it matter so much? How long would a coil typically last on one of these before you'd get suss on it? Mate - I had no end of problems with my 95 3.9 and tried replacing all the gear with stock gear, gas gear you name it. Over the years it became apparent that the lucas dizzy can have no noticeable shaft play but still throw errant spark on its parade test....result backfire....so out it all goes and in goes a Schorcher Dizzy made in Oz with all GM and Ford and Australian Bosch bits and a set of leads from the same place in Melbourne and a coil from the same place (resin) and.....runs better than it did off the production line and LPG is a beautiful thing again (for the last 20k since I did it and very confident having owned australian cars with electronic ignition before).

Nah mate, the wire thingy is a precision output voltage measuring device, subject to patent protection in 33 countries, including Nigeria. 12mm gap is sacrosant, otherwise you burn the coil insulator. I like the idea of just getting rid of the Lucas dizzy and putting oz parts in. I've overhauled and replaced the ignition with an electronic ignition in an old ford I used to own (which always had tuning issues) and that together with a new coil meant that lpg performance was beautiful and it didn't just go out anymore...maybe I'll do the same.
Ozscott, would you be kind enough to put up a list of the actual parts you ended up putting in your Disco pretty pretty please :) If it worked for you then I wouldn't mind giving it a go too since I'm going to be putting new bits in my Disco anyway.
YA, check out Perfromance ignitions in Nunawading. They have replacement scorcher Dizzys there. They make them up from Aussie parts.Quote:

Sounds good...although expensive. But really the piece of mind that would offer would be great! I think that's the one I just found on the internet. Would they put it in and tune it up for me too or would they charge through the nose to do that as well?

I have found Performance ignitions very good to deal with. They really know ignition systems and what works. They put me onto the Bosch rotor that Bee Utey now recommends. I got all my Magnacore leads, Rotor and Vacuum advance from them and found there prices very good. You can get the standard distributor working sweet. Mine is running like a dream on both gas and petrol ( Touch Wood!!! ). Give them a call, They are happy to answer your questions.
As said above they are great. I threw new pick up coil and plate, amplifier modules, caps, buttons, coils, leads etc (all lucas and genuine) and it didnt provide anything like a long term fix...did the perfomance igitions Scorcher as said above and all is well...now just pick up holden bits like rotor button and cap if you need it and the amp module is $40-$50 from an RACQ breakdown patrol who stock them if you every need that gear but knowing holden like I do you will probably go 10 bloody years without needing to do button and cap and amp.

Performance ignitions know their stuff. old fashioned service, do dizzys rebuilds etc for vintage cars to modern, they make stuff/modify etc etc.
I have used them many times and would highly recommend them.
Prices are competitive, I even had some plug leads made for my out board motor and about 10% of what the dealer would have charged!
They sell reco change over Vacuum advance units for land rovers too.
The scorcher is recommended by them to be set at 10DEG, they give you a card with what parts are used so you have a record of what part numbers are used so you can buy your over the counter spares if needed. The Dizzy does sit slightly higher than the OEM one.
