    Question D1 steering damper

    Hi all,
On a recent trip out to Jamieson Vic, I managed to bend a track rod and damage a steering damper on the Barkly Jeep track. I have managed to pick up a good condition 2nd hand Bilstein damper and Rod. I just need to confirm the correct mounting direction. The damper indicates that the protective shroud should be mounted facing towards the centre of the vehicle. The service manual shows the OEM one with the shroud of the damper mounted on the Drivers side of the axel, my old damper Ridepro was also mounted as per OEM (Driver side).
I guess to try and clarify which side of the damper connects to the track Rod and which side connects to the chassis

    Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

This is not answering your question but you'd be better off relocating the damper to the steering drag link (in front of the axle). It works the same & is out of harms way. Defenders have them there as standard.

Upgrade the track rod to HD too.

I liked the way you managed to get the disco in the background.

Hi Barjop - I have an OME damper and the shroud end is on chassis (drivers side)
It's slightly higher on that end so I guess any water and muck 'n stuff will drain out that way?

Scouse, thanks for the info I did investigate this option as its very sound and gets the damper way out of the way. The only one I found was an LRA version which uses one of the steering protector mounting points. As I have an ARB bullbar with winch and protector it eliminates mounting the damper using their system.

Dullbird. I saw your setup in a post ealier today and my eyes lit up. I could not tell if it was mounted on a disco or not. If it is, where did you source the mounting brackets for both the steering rod and the fixed point. It also looks like you can then utilize the original damper as well. This could save me a lot of problems in the future

The mounting bracket for the rod can be sourced at a decent 4x4 shop or a bigger (truck maybe) wheel alignment place. They often fit steering damper to vehicles that never had them from new & use a universal clamp to mount the damper on the rod.

The other end is not critical. The damper is a pin type mount so anything can be used to mount it as long as it's strong enough. Lou has used a bracket just like mine but it doesn't have to be mounted in the exact same spot. It can be more to the centre of the car if need be (just make sure the damper itself has sufficient travel in either direction).
