    Noise in intake

    Hi,

I have a 300tdi and it runs great, little rough on idle, but uses no water or oil.
I am new to diesels, as I have always had petrol vehicles, always do my own servicing and repairs.
I have noticed recently that there is a strange puffing noise coming from the air box, there is no oil on the filter, and it is most noticable just off idle.
It is not a knock, sounds more like a "puff - puff - puff", there is also a little blowby, but don't know how much is acceptable for the 300tdi motor?, if I remove the oil filler cap and lay it on the opening it will dance around but does not fly off.
Other than this it runs great, and starts first time, does not smoke or anything like that.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Does it have 240,000 km on it?

No, it's got 260K on it, and has had the motor rebuilt at around 220K,
I didn't notice the noise when I first got it, but after a long drive down the free way and some low range work last week it is now noticable, not overly loud, but noticable.

Tappets, Tappets Tappets The valve clearances Need adjusting / checking every 10,000km. My guess is there is at least 1 VERY loose one, could even have worn through the lash cap

    Thanks JC

Adjusted the valves yesterday, and it is running and sounding a lot better now.

All were loose, but not extremely, so they were all nipped up a bit and now the noise is a lot less.

    Cheers
