Detroit TT in front or rear diff

    Gents,

What are peoples opinions of putting a truetrack in the front or the rear diff first (i currently have open wheel diffs).

I have bought a truetrack for the fact that i dont have to change my axels, and that its a heap cheaper than an ARB locker (and im more into beach driving than rock hopping). The truetrack is configured for the rear, but its easy enough to change it for fitting into the front.

My question is should i install the truetrack in the front, so i leave myself the option to put a detroit or ARB in the back at a later stage? (obviously needing HD axels)
will putting the truetrac just in the front reduce the 4wding capability?

i read that you dont need to upgrade your axels when installing a TT, but since im installing it JUST in the front diff, will that put too much load on the CVs?

    Cheers, Steve.

    Depending on your plans.

TrueTraks are preferred option for a (non-air locker) front diff and Detriot Locker in the back.

A friend had only a true-track in the front of his RRc because he towed a boat through a little river before launching the boat and his rationale was that his front wheels were the first ones to get to the muddy bank on the other side of the creek and that's where he needed the traction. By the time his rear wheels were at the bank, he had better traction at the top of the bank. Front TTs worked for him in that situation.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

But be aware that it may affect your steering a smidgeon.
I have a Quaife that I had fitted to the front of my RRC and I found that there was a small effect on the steering,of a slight reluctance to turn in.
Sort of a feeling of no no then turn.
    Not a big deal .
I removed mine as I had bought it second hand and it obviously had not been professionally set up as the pinion seal leaked. One day when I am really keen I may have it professionally set up and reinstall it, when I feel strong.

I'd go true track in the front, that leaves the option for the rear locker completely free.

Have tru traks front and rear in my 93 rr classic couldn't be happier in the improved performance for the dollars spent in fitting them and noticeable improvement in off road abilities

only effect is in steering slight stiffness in return to centre when turning corners but not noticeable whilst driving at speed normally on road

I have one in the rear of my RRC (upgraded to 24 spline at the same time).

One day I will upgrade the front to 24 spline and fit one there as well.

Cool thanks people, i will install the truetrack in the front and leave my options open in the rear (leaning towards a detroit and new axels).

For the people with RRC's and truetracks in the front diff - have you had any issues with the CV's or axels breaking or premature wear? (are you still using the 10 spline axels?)

    Cheers, Steve

Which part TT did you purchase? The TTs are directional (eg. Front and rear are different).

If you decide to fit the TT to the other end you need to disassemble and put it around the right way!!!

I'd never fit the TT to the front without something in the rear first or your handling on and offroad will be rubbish..
The thing is going to understeer like crazy without the rear being done first.

    Hi Tombie,

Yep thanks for the advice. I understand the TT's are directional and the internals need to be swapped to fit it to the front of the vehicle.
There is a description of how to do it here: discoweb.org -- under the tech section, and find the truetrack gears page.

Why do you think that the vehicle will understeer like crazy? do you mean under acceleration, coasting or deceleration around a corner?

I agree there will be a mild change to the steering of the vehicle, but most people say it is not a negative change. Some have said it improves the return to centre aspect of the steering, and in some cases it reduces steering shimmy so your car tracks straighter.

    Steve.
