    Auto shifter shaft burning hot

Like the title says, after anything more than 30-45 mins driving, the metal shaft from shifter to auto box is burning hot. I haven't changed the auto fluid since I've had the Disco (about 18 months) and have done some pretty hard driving. Could it be as simple as old fluid?

Also, I don't remember it getting that hot before I fitted the 33in Bighorns. Would that possibly attribute to my problem as well?

On another note, I woke up this morning to a Disco that won't turn over. It'll crank fine, but won't kick over. Checked fuel pump fuse, all ok. Fuel pump itself? I recently fitted a VN in-tank Bosch pump which is a lot quieter than the old one, so I can't hear if it's priming or not. Any ideas?

Same thing happened to mine and it turned out to be the fuel pump.

I'm assuming that's what it'll be. I hoped it wouldn't be though, that soon after fitting a brand new one. Guessing there's some electrical short somewhere if that's what it turns out to be.

I hope for your sake it is something simple cause they are not cheap to replace as you would already know, good luck with it.

There is a short wiring harness from the pump to above the rear muffler. Both ends of this harness can melt terminals. Undo the plug and check for brown plastic. The one over the rear muffler can be joined by solder and heatshrink. The pump housing connector is a bit more difficult, I usually acquire a new second hand harness to repair this. The cause is a failing pump drawing more current than the connector is designed to carry.

Put the Disco on a flatbed and had it taken to my mechanic, who started it and drove it into his workshop. I almost wish it hadn't have started so there could be something that was definitely wrong with it. Hopefully he susses it out before the weekend or our camping trip is off.

I used to have a VP commodore wagon, when the fuel pump started to go it was intermitent. A roadside RACV bloke tapped the underside of the tank and told me that it was a common way to get the pump started when they are on their way out. I ended up having to carry a length of timber to bang the underside of the tank to get it going, that only worked for a few more days before having to replace the pump.

Is your TC locking up? If it is slipping it will be the reason for the box getting hot, could be the case with the bigger tyres
