Unhappy Debris in the sump Tdi 200

    Disco 93 Tdi 200 220k klms
I removed the sump for a general clean out and found two metal bits and what looks like two hard plastic or rubber bits. Does anyone know what these could be? The steel cup OD 10mm ID 8mm could this be an inlet/exhaust valve cap? I'll remove the tappet cover tomorrow but the motor is running well. Thanks

    Yep, valve stem cap.

Pretty common part to fail in 200 and 300Tdi's.

If there is one missing, replace the whole set. I tend to think they are a service item like a timing belt and replace around the same time.

    Caps & Timing Belt

    Thanks Ric
Speaking of timing belts I replaced the belt recently; I did'nt know when it was last done. Should this be done every 60k klms or sooner.
    Thanks again.

Can't remember on the 200, all I know is that they are pretty good, far less problems than some 300's have had and I go 80,000km on a 300.

IIRC it used to be something like 70,000miles/110,000km in temperate conditions, average use but most of Oz is considered extreme use in Land Rover speak.

PM JC, (justinc) he works on the engines all the time and will steer you straight.

    Sump Debris - Thanks

I removed the tappet/rocker cover and found one cap with the center missing and just the outer ring left, a couple of others were chipped.
The other parts of caps in the sump were obviously left over from previous problems.
The great thing is the boy uses the Disco every day for work the power was down but still going well, with the new caps and correct gaps you have to fairly hang on when accelerating, this may depend on what your smoking at the time but 230k and still going strong.

Once again thanks to everyone, this forum is excellent.
