Took it in for a radiator rodding...ended up with a re-core!!!

Well I took the Disco in to have its radiator rodded because I suspected it was slightly blocked and I didn't like how hot the engine always seemed after trips and how the viscous fans would kick in all the time when I'd just started driving or as soon as I stopped at lights for ten seconds.

Took it to a recommended guy that someone off here told me about who gave me a reasonable quote for the rodding so I was happy. When he took out the radiator and unblocked it he not only found that it was about 20% blocked with gunk, but the gunk that was in there is what was holding the water in...whoops

As soon as it was clean he realised that the core was leaking and he could either patch it up and not guarantee the work or perform a re-core and have it properly guaranteed. So the job quickly jumped from a $250 rodding and flush to a $650 re-core. After getting it back today though it's not seeming as hot and I didn't hear the viscous fans come on once on the trip home so I'm happy My wallet is just a bit lighter than I would have liked that's all.

One thing I did notice though is a weird plastic smell under the hood when I opened it after the trip home...and on top of the radiator it looks like he's put some sort of glue on it or something because it's a bit more shiny than it was...not sure, so long as it's just the stuff on the surface that's making the funny smell and nothing that will affect anything else!

Also just as a point of interest he said that he replaced the core with a three tube one instead of the four tube one that was in there before which had smaller tubes. His reasoning was that the three tube one had bigger tubes and would improve flow. I hope he's right.

All good for now though, we'll see how it goes.

the 3 tube core has a larger internal space which means its less likely to clog up BUT... if you work it hard and heavy when its hot you can get overheating (especially if you have an auto and the aircon on)

Damn that doesn't sound that good...I've got a manual but I got the radiator done so that there wouldn't be ANY risk of overheating. Kind of feel a bit ripped off now...is it worth worrying about?

Why would an "expert" do that if it's worse off. It's not exactly going to be blocked up again for ten years or so anyway...I don't think it was ever done before now.

Yep, a few people on this forum recommended Nulon Long Life (the green one) with a ratio of 5ltrs coolant mixed with 5ltrs water (distilled) so I'm using that, although come to think of it I'm not certain he used distilled water but we're in Melbourne so the water here isn't that bad.

Young Angus, you worry too much...
I had the same thing explained to me when I got mine recored.
3 larger cores as opposed to 4 smaller cores which will block easier? I'd go with the 3 larger ones! I doubt you would EVER notice the difference in the real world.

If it is a NATRAD core the 3 core has 21% more surface area than the OEM 4 core and subsequently about 20% more cooling capacity.

I was so upset when Arthur Garthon had a 3 core supplied under used car warranty 10 years ago when I bought mine that I rang NATRAD and spoke to an engineer who went through the specs on a computer and advised me that.
In 10 years using Nulon every 2 years with distilled water, the temp gauge has never moved over half, even towing at 40C or low ranging at up to 47C.
    So I believe it.

Thanks guys, I feel a lot better now

I'll see if it's a NATRAD core which rings a bell actually so that might be what it was. Someone said that the guy at Iceman Radiators was very knowledgeable and he sounded like he definitely knew what he was talking about so I do trust him in his decision...even more so after hearing that

Yep turns out it is a "ATRAD" who apparently bought out NATRAD, so they hopefully still make them the same
